Though practical, his witty, origami-like physical maps and sleek 4-D interactive digital maps can also carve a historic or cultural path through a city (like his History Mapped presidential series). The company has now turned its attention to Cuba. Using his signature StreetSmart series design for printed maps (Internet connections are still scant in Cuba), Mr. VanDam points out Havana s restaurants, hotels, resorts and the home-based restaurants known as paladares and offers five self-guided tours that wind through the city s many plazas to contemporary galleries, music venues and gardens, along the Malecón coastal road and as far as the beaches of Playas de Este. As an amateur mambo dancer and Latin Jazz aficionado, Mr. VanDam has always had a fascination with Cuba and its connection to the Latin jazz scene in New York, he said on the phone from his office there. Musically, it's a world power. I remember my parents doing the mambo in the 1950s and their parents in the 30s. So the maps focus a lot on those aspects of Cuba s culture. Walking Havana from one end to the other gave Van Dam a sense of the urban fabric, which is, by his description, frozen in time and brimming with period-specific architectural jewels buildings that reflect Plateresque, Cuban baroque, Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, Mid-century modern, and Soviet Brutalist architectures. Cuba, he says, "avoided the 1960s Corbusian redevelopment schemes that destroyed so many world cities throughout the Americas." Havana is currently a dark spot on Google Street Maps, and Google hasn't yet released a statement saying when the company will upgrade its coverage. Even if Street Maps did work there, though, there are no guarantees it would have very many users in the near future. I'm just back from Havana. This map was very useful for getting around in Central Havana and Old Havana. I wish I could give it only 4.5 stars, because there were a couple of places in Old Havana that weren't on it - a church and plaza where our group was headed.I'd recommend supplementing this with another map, even if it's just something you print at home off the Internet. I had my smartphone with me, and used an offline map app on it which also helped a lot. Essentially, my phone worked as a GPS which was great. But phone batteries run out of juice, while a handy folding map doesn't!

Perfect size and much better than paper map of Havana. Don't make the trip without is. Streets are accurate and really helps navigate the city. Also, it is waterproof and almost crush proof. Its hot and humid in Cuba even in the winter,so keep that in mind when selecting a travel map.

Planned a trip to Cuba right before the travel ban tightened down again. I did a decent amount of research/planning before going but decided to buy this map last minute on a whim and was really glad I did. The major museums, statues, and historical sites are all indicated on the map as well as a bunch of good restaurants/bars. I rained a couple days while I was there so the fact that this was laminated was perfect. I always carried this map and a sharpie with me to mark it up as I visited the different spots, it will definitely be a nice memory to look back at one day.

This map is awesome! Just got back from Cuba and I couldn't believe how useful it was. I downloaded an offline map was was pretty good but this was actually even better. As a matter of fact, our host couldn't believe how useful it was so we left it with him for future travelers and I'm ordering another one. It has popular restaurants, places to visit and everything else you'd want. Water/humidity resistant and super lightweight. I recommend bringing a wax marker or white-erase marker for when you are in Cuba to keep track of where you are staying, where you want to go, etc.

This is all you really need for a week or so in Havana. It's a great map, very detailed, and has a lot of points of interest. Pair this with some time on tripadvisor before you go, and you won't need the Lonely Planet book (or any other guide book).

I loved that I could fold this map up and keep it in my back pocket. It came in handy since I didn't have internet service while I was in Cuba. True, you could have a map downloaded on your phone, but with this map no need to worry about recharging batteries, and I could quickly find points of interest.

This is a nice, colorful map that is easy to stick in a bag or a purse. However, I didn't always find it to be the best guide--it's much easier to download a map onto your phone (one that you can use offline since internet access is spotty in Cuba). The online maps are more up to date and easier to follow.

To be honest, this wasn't very useful during our trip to Havana. It doesn't cover the entire city and the compact size makes it difficult to read. It's easier to download an offline map to your phone (via an app like the excellent maps.me) and use that instead - which is what we did.

This was very handy as a street map. It was really nice not having to drain my phone battery walking around all day. Very useful around Havana Vieja, in particular. Very durable and it will fit in your pocket without too much trouble. Used it for a week and it's still like new.

I gave this book three stars ONLY because I like the Author. Otherwise I would have given it two.This was a short story, 223 pages I believe. Alex (hero) comes back home (to the Highlands) after a 5 year retreat. The story is short but kind of explains why he "ran away". He leaves a Christian and comes home a Pagan. His 5 year retreat made him rich, he has much land, beautiful concubines (6) of them, and jewels. Alex's character is a pompous jerk! His pagan ways, his "I'll get even with her" attitude, his whiny grudges reeeeeaaly made me dislike him. He's no Alpha male! Not my hero! He's a butt head!Now Keely, the heroin, ran away from marriage to Alex's brother because she was deeply in love with Alex and she was just 16!!! So, when she "escapes" the enemies home (where she has hid the last 5 ) years, and returns to the McCay Castle to apologize before she goes to her fathers home, she is found outside the keep and brought face to face with Alex.Their reunion is painful to read. The clan is mean, Alex is awful to her. This went on and on and on and ooooon!!!This book is NOT romantic, no sweet kisses, no sweet love words, no kind words. Jewels are given as a gift but Keely finds out they were supposed to be for his "favorite" concubine !Not until 87% of the book did he FINALLY become soft hearted. Of course this was after he killed some of his clan members and kicked others out.Spoiler Alert:This book frustrated me. I did not have any "aww" moments. He took her hard her first time (because he was angry, holding on to his grudge, and being drunk).Only about 3 love scenes, not hot, not descriptive, not emotional. I've enjoyed other books from Violetta Rand but this one didn't work for me. Not a fan of reading F*** in books. This has sex scenes in case you were expecting it. The real reason for my 3-star review is the unbelievable and disappointing ending.Ending spoiler. The clan leader's right hand Petro, is described as well versed in the law of the land and wise in intellect. He's painted as a logic driven and a very intriguing character. Yet Petro decides to steel Keely away (wife to the Laird) without using any of the logic he's been so noted to using. Petro travels alone with married female Keely, without additional soldier protection (completely dumb), and doesn't let Laird Alex (husband to Keely) know at the time he takes her even though Petro is depicted as being very trustworthy. And we're suppose to believe Petro does all this brash and poor decision making because a warring clan (that no one has reason to trust) invites him to with a wonky betrothal claim? Very out of Petro's character and a poor unbelievable ending. There really needed to be another sub-plot to add a layer of complexity that would lend a believable reason for the vile character and Keely to finally meet.

Betrayed by not only family, but the one you love can most definitely cause a person to attempt to become callous or to harden their heart, by suppressing all emotion. How they handle these conflicts in their lives shapes a person into whomever they eventually become. Learning to deal with responsibility, whether it is desired or not, becomes a necessary process. One cannot allow pain or insecurities from his or her past to rule their actions forever. Sometimes love is just forever, whether one wishes to admit that or not, and clinging to the pains of the past only blocks any chance they may have of finding happiness and contentment. In “Unbreakable”, Alex and Keely attempt to handle their past conflicts in ways they can justify in their minds, however, that is not always the proper path to redemption and contentment. When you read this novel by a Violetta Rand, you learn to appreciate the depth of her character construction and her attention to detail. She so effortlessly presents options for her characters to choose to act on or not. As the reader, you are able to experience the frustrations as well as the joys these characters face. There are a few steamy sexual encounters, considering what was considered socially acceptable at the time, but all very tastefully done. An excellent read!

About the Author

The author was born in Cleveland, Ohio and presently resides in the Tidewater region Virginia. He wrote the book when he realized he could touch many lives through his story telling. A story about his testimony has been published in the Virginia Beach Beacon Newspaper, National TSA "Family Portrait", MIX magazine, and honoured as Hampton Roads Top 40 Under 40 young business leaders in Hampton Roads. McCall is a licensed Minister and works with youth all over the world as the Co-Director of an International College Preparation Program. He currently is a graduate student at the College of William and Mary pursuing a Masters in Education.

Is just okay. Both my 13 yr old son with tourettes and my 11 yrs old daughter read this book. Found his humor tough to figure out when reading (both my son and daughter). Had high hopes for this book and was disappointed, but not a bad book.

What an inspiring and informative story! This book cast a lot of much needed enlightenment on Tourette Syndrome. It was written in a captivating, humorous, and explanatory manner that would appeal to both children and adults. I applaud the author, Stephen McCall, for his courage in telling his story, and I highly recommend this book.

This book is a must read for those who have Tourette Syndrome(TS) and those who don't. If you do have TS this book will encourage, uplift, and inspire you, by using someone else's experiences. It shows you that you are not the only one who has dealt with the affects of TS. You get an indept look on how Mike (the main character in the book) deals with his on going tics which are very humorous indeed! It had me laughing throughout the whole book! But it was also very imformative. I do not have TS but I know someone who does, and reading the book helped me to understand what the disease was really about. On TV you see so many different ways that TS is portrayed but never the correct way. In the book the author gives a clear and concise definition of TS and some of the behavior associated with it. I now have a comprehensible understanding about TS and how it not only affects the person but their family and friends as well. You have got to get this book today if you want to learn more about TS and laugh at the same time!

This book is excellent! I recently found out that someone I know has Tourette Syndrome, but I knew absolutely nothing about this disorder. The Tyrannosaurus Tic explains what Tourette Syndrome is, the symptoms and how someone with this disorder may be feeling. Before I started reading, I felt intimidated because of my lack of knowledge, but I was pleasantly surprised with Tyrannosaurus Tic's humor. I was put at ease and was able to appreciate this book as an educational tool and as a good read! I now have an understanding of this disorder and also how I can help people with Tourette Syndrome.

This was an easy to read, funny, and insightful book. After reading, I had a better understanding of TS's effects and struggles of kids that have this disorder. The book made me laugh, but also feel a deep compassion for the main character's struggles. I would recommend this book not only to those suffering with TS, but any other child or family with a similar disorder. Great read!

This book is hilarious!!!I was literally laughing out loud while I was reading it.Then; half way through the book; I realized the author was using humor to teach the reader about TS.I was not only entertained but I was enlightened as well.I can't wait for the next book (Diagnosis) to come out!

my mom and i both read this book and i learned much more than i expected. it was a quick, easy read, that was packed with information. i felt sad for the main character, but enjoyed his humorous and optimistic outlook about having TS. this story gives a great way to learn about TS from a child's outlook.=)

I must read this book 10+ times a day to my 14 month old and 2 year old. They love it! Monster trucks are really popular in our house right now and this book is nice and simple with great pictures of the trucks in action. My 2 year old almost has the entire book memorized and already knows all the parts of a monster truck like the body, cab, roll cage and engine. It's a quick and simple read, but it's just perfect for my two monster truck lovin' boys!

It was a gift for our 5 y.o. grandson. We were expecting a better story to go along with the pictures.

My grandson loves all things Monster Trucks! This is one of his favorite books for bedtime reading. I highly recommend it!

I bought this for my 5yr old grandson and he loved it. He loves Monster trucks so we had to sit down on Christmas day and look at every page. He knew most of them already and told me all about them. He showed it to me two more times before going home so it was a big hit in the middle of all the days toys and activities. It was smaller and less pages than I thought it would be but apparently just right for the 5yr old attention span.

Note: This is a sort of in-between group of books for the *Batgirl* title. It happens after the initial "New 52" run, and is a part of that, but in tone is very similar to the *Rebirth* title. In all three instances: "New 52", the "Burnside" books, and *Rebirth*, the series started over at Vol. 1's.-----*Batgirl, Vol. 1: The Batgirl of Burnside* is not a continuity reboot, but it is a TONE reboot. Since the 2011 "New 52" reboot, Barbara Gordon, back again as Batgirl, had been quite angsty and brooding. Who could blame her? She had been paralyzed, and just recovered the use of her legs.Through much trial and fear, Babs began to reassume her life as the hero she had been, who she was meant to be. It made for some great drama and wasn't really overly done, to my opinion, but struck the right balance.But the writers decided to go in a different direction, and make the title more fun and less brooding. Originally, Gail Simone wanted to do so, but was told no. When she was no longer with the book, DC relented with the new writers and now so we had the "Burnside" story line.The volume begins with a fire that destroys Dinah Lance's (Black Canary) home (and coincidentally, Barbara's Batgirl gear, which was in Lance's dojo at the time). Forced to start over, Babs *really* starts over. She had just moved to an area in Gotham named Burnside, which is a trendy spot for students and young people to live. She seems to decide to create a new Batgirl costume and persona to go with her new life and outlook.Things seem to be going well, despite a very sinister and creepy adversary in the shadows, but Babs' arrogance and carelessness are going to bite her in the backside if she isn't careful. Dinah warns her friend of this, but she doesn't listen. It might be a fatal mistake for her.I really was uncertain what to think of this title. It seemed to start out as some strange effort to try too hard to be somehow cool or something like that. Or to show that DC cares about or is connected to youth, or whatever. I also didn't care for the new art style at all. It was so different from previous looks I was used to that it put me off. At least at first. Now it has grown on me and I like it, though I still question if it is the appropriate art style for a Batfamily title.But there is justification for the art style, in that it shows the changes in Barbara Gordon and her life. This is a new Babs, who wanted to be less gritty and more fun. The art reflected a change in tone as well, as the title would be more "playful" and less grim.I do think that at times in the beginning, the writers tried to shove too many trendy youth things into the mix, as if the characters were saying "we are young and trendy, look at us". It just was trying *way* too hard. Some bit more loose and laid-back of an approach might have helped.However, despite some minor misgivings, I was quite pleased with this graphic novel in the end, and I liked the direction the writers were/are taking the character. I also found the new supporting characters, such as Frankie, Qadir, etc., enjoyable to read about.This *Batgirl* iteration of last year, that in some ways, I have heard, continues in the *Rebirth* era, is something I think folks will enjoy.Rating: 4/5 Stars.

The series is great. I've been a batgirl fan my whole life about 30 something years. I was a big fan of the Simone run but this new team is refreshing and gives Barbara a fresh take a new generation of batgirls and batboys can love that's what is important. A lot of fans forget that every generation has a point when the fall into a characters story and it should reflect the time the story is told. Comics are written for everyone. Stop being stuck in your ways and embrace change. You might learn something other than being bitter and complaining about the next generation. The generation before you thought you were lazy and useless too.

This new "reboot" continues the story of Barbara Gordon in a new part of town, with new friends, and a new suit. With that also comes a new creative team. The art is pretty good. It's different, but honestly fits the tone they took. The writing is decent. They set out to do a lot on this five issue arc, and not every bit of it happens to stick. The villain sets out to impact Barbara in a lot of different ways, but they only ever feel cosmetic. This is likely because they have to deliver every piece of the story in a brief five issues.The book has to establish a new creative teams style and take, while also attempting to dissect Barbara to the very core, and it just doesn't have the impact it could have if it had been a 6-8 issue arc.As it stands, the story is still pretty good, and fleshes out Barbara in some fun ways. It's a very entertaining read, and I look forward to future arcs with this take on Babs. The book steps into its own towards the end, and looks to be going to some fun places. Highly recommended for Babs fans, although it won't set your world on fire!

You'll notice that the majority of reviews for this book fall into either 5-star or 1-star ratings. Basically, lots of people fell in love with Gail Simone's Batgirl and were disappointed because this isn't the same at that. My advice: go into this expecting a complete reboot of the character. I think it's a really fresh and new take, but it's probably not for everyone.Similar to Black Canary and Gotham Academy, this reads kind-of like YA (and I mean that in a good way). I think this is actually a great book to start with if you're new to DC or the Batfam - it's fun, it has heart, and the art is fantastic.

Not a big follower of the DCU, this was a nice book to start with. Very new age in the art and story.

Love the new redesign. Her outfit is made out of practical material instead of skin tight spandex.

Love this book for my 4 year old. Matching hidden pictures, mazes, counting And tracing perfect for preschoolers and kindergarten.

I got this for my spirited almost Kindergartner who hates to fill out worksheets most of the time. She loves the Highlights magazines when we are at the doctors office so when we saw this at Target she begged to get this. I thought about it for a few days and ordered it on Amazon and she loooves filling it out! Hooray! Now she pulls it out and is happy to do pages in it. I think part of it is that the pictures are colorful and fun and it changes activities up quite a bit. Some of these workbooks do very similar activities for each letter but this one tweaks it just enough that they feel fresh and new with each additional page.

Educational and fun. There are a variety of different activities in this book. It keeps learning fun for kiddos because it’s not just all tracing and writing letters and numbers and shapes like many other workbooks. Of course there are letters, numbers, and shapes, but the activities are more interesting. There are also mazes and hidden picture pages as well. A+

Our 5.5 year old grandson loves Highlights magazine and he is in kindergarten. I bought him this for Christmas...he loves doing his "homework" First day he sat down and did 12 pages with little help, except for me reading the directions on each page. Good choice for early and excited learners.

We purchased the Highlights Kindergarten workbook for our son who will enter kindergarten this Fall. We plan to use it during the Summer so he can practice and doesn’t get a brain drain. Our son loves to trace the uppercase and lowercase letters from A to Z and numbers from 1 to 20. Each letter and number page has different additional activists such as matching, coloring, drawing, mazes, and sounds. There is also a section on colors, shapes, patterns, and sight words. There are math concepts such as skip counting and simple addition and subtraction. Grouping and sorting is also included. Overall this workbook has a lot of activities and concepts build in it. It will keep our son busy for a couple of months. Best part is that he can skip around and do different sections versus page by page.

My kindergartener grandson loves to show off what he has learned in school. He loves to sit at my desk and work. Doing the activities in this book keeps him busy when I'm busy. He loves to play school and now he has books to use.

This book seems great as busy work to give my child but i didnt find it very educational. I would not buy it again.

I've been consistently doing this with my 5-year-old every day after school and I love how diverse it is. We started with tracing lines, once he was done with that we went to shapes, when he got bored we did some colors and then some numbers. It has everything a kindergarten child learns. ABC, numbers,shapes,opposites,colors. The activities are short but stimulating. I would greatly recommend this to all parents of preschool age children.

I started doing what is in the book and my progress learning the guitar just took off. I refer to it all the time when I want to improve something in my practice. Jonathan Harnum has written a great exposition on the many facets of what it means to be a practicing musician. His ideas can apply to improving any skill. I particularly appreciate his explanation of the value of s-l-o-w practice. His book has inspired me to practice smarter, not harder, to receive a higher return on my considerable investment in practice time. As I seek to expand my skill set into as yet uncharted territories, I anticipate more efficient use of my time in gaining and mastering these new skills. A perfect companion and complement to Jonathan Harnum's book is Effortless Mastery, by Kenny Werner. Together, they present a complete picture of the way to achieve true mastery, not just over a musical instrument or, indeed over any specific individual discipline, but over oneself, which is the true mastery.

Great book covering the broader aspects of practice and reminding us that practice does not mean punishing ourselves.Get back to the inquisitive and experimental child experience. Be rewarded by not wasting your time on deflating activities.I have spent hundreds of hours working on my instrument in a non-musical way only to be surprised by my sounding non-musical. As soon as I started to listen and learn from the music that inspired me, the theory and technical side of playing was an exciting stepping stone this end goal of actually making expressive music.Highly recommended.

I am reading (for the second time) the audio book version of Jonathan Harnum's "The Practice of Practice". This is read by the author, and it is a very VERY good discussion of learning, particularly as applied to playing music, but with carry-over to any skill. The book links to a web site with an extensive collection of examples and studies, and I liked it so much that I also bought the paper version, so that I could see the illustrations and use the scannable links. I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend this book to all my music-making friends! I suggest the audio book version (Audible) because it has some rhythm demonstrations that are great, and because the author makes the whole topic chatty and approachable. (And I bet you get the paper version, too!)

I bought this book because I practice piano daily. This book gave me great insights into how to structure that. No typical self help cliches, just very original thoughtful and clear writing. It is also about much more than I ever expected. Its about how the brain works, why naps are important, and how to shape good practice. I have recommended or bought this for a number of people who don't play any instrument.

I agree with other reviewers regarding too much filler. Add to that too much name dropping and too many repeated anecdotes. If you distilled the actual practice methodology covered in the book, it would amount to short pamphlet.
