Basic story is a kid is in the middle of playing with his toys, when his mother tells him to pack them away. He explains he's not done with them yet, his mother replies with a spiel that makes no sense that "our belongings we must show respect, by cleaning them up when we are done." You feel this kids' frustration, his mother is proving to him she's not listening to a word he's saying. So the depressed kid decides to push his toys under his bed, only to find out his train is possessed and can talk. It tells him his toys would not like what he is planning to do. He must return every toy to its correct place. Even more horrifying his toys like zombies start to make their way into the coal type carriages of the toy train. Well the kid isn't actually terrified and the toys end up neatly put away, but the main issue of the mother who makes a ridiculous demand of a kid and doesn't care about his voice, let alone listen to it, is never addressed. I mean it's like telling a kid to go wash up his plate when he's started eating his dinner. The illustrations are very well done, and the cover image is a good example of their quality inside. Hey, Declutter Train! is formatted to take up the entire screen in landscape mode (holding your device horizontally). The pictures and text display together on the screen like a traditional open physical book with two pages on the screen at a time. A lot of self published kindle picture book authors can't be bothered to take the time to format their work and reading them is like looking at a mess. I always like to take the time to acknowledge those who care enough about their readers and their own work to make sure everyone enjoys what they've written/illustrated to the fullest potential.
Jonny enjoys playing in his room with his toys. When his mother calls him for a snack, she reminds him that he must clean up and put each toy back in its proper place. At first, he is tempted to push all the toys under the bed, but then he feels guilty about that when his train begins talking to him. Jonny realizes each of his toys deserves respect. Each hops aboard the train. As the train chugs around the room, the toys find their way back to their proper resting place. Jonny smiles at himself with satisfaction and realizes that his mother was right. This is a nice tale that can be used to teach the importance of being responsible to take care of one's possessions and the process of growing up. The tale is told in rhyme. There are some advanced vocabulary words like disembarked and disgruntled, which will need to be explained to younger children.
This book is written very nicely! The concept of making toys alive and them having names and talking with a little "messy" boy is great! My son red this book and right after that he went to make sure his toys are where they need to be, it was very pleasant to watch that! I'm glad I found this book, and it turned out to be interesting for my kid and very useful for me as a parent. And it's great to see that your son wants to talk about it, and kind of discuss everything what was happening in that book! For sure 5 out of 5!
What a fun way to remind your kiddos that all their toys have a special place for each and every single one. My daughter enjoyed the illustrations and the storyline and I enjoyed the lesson. Win win. “Dad, trains DO talkâ€
When all good things come to an end, Jonny was left to clean his room by himself. Overwehelemd by the mess, he decided the best thing to do was to push it under his bed. Just as he thought he was done, his toys came to life. Through some nice lessons on sorting, they taught him to organize and put his toys back where they belonged.Pros:This book teaches a few important lessons. The first is about keeping his roo clean. The second is about doing it the right way. He needed to get his room back in order and this time he learned how to organize the toys and put them back where they belonged.Cons:I can tell this book had some nice rhyming to it. However, the flow did not work for me. When I read this book out loud, some paragraphs followed a nice rhythm and others did not.My Overall Opinion:I am a huge fan of books with a good lesson. I love reading to my learners and finishing off with a deep conversation. This book will give us a nice start.I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine and were in no way influenced by outside sources. I am a professional blogger at Little Lady Plays
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for a review. The headline is from the back cover Hey, Declutter Train, an apt description of the book. I read the book twice-once silently, then aloud to hear the rhyming scheme. The targeted audience (4-7/8) will easily relate to the story's message, i.e., a place for everything, everything in its place. Ms. Clark has created an effective story to motivate young children to keep their their books and toys safe and tidy. When his mother announces playtime is over, Jonny shoves the clutter under the bed, until a talking train tells him "Treating your toys like that is not fair, and to do so would be impolite. In the dark, they would get quite a scare being packed there together so tight." Great teachable moment/reinforcement of the importance of "clean up time" as my grandniece's preschool refers to the chore. I agree with another reader that some of the vocabulary may be beyond the intended audience's comprehension (e.g., whelp) but overall the book is a fun read with kid-friendly illustrations.
My little girl enjoyed this story. We read through, and she right away engaged with the concept. She loves to have special places for each of her belongings. Although she is six and at a good reading level, some of the words were a bit mature for her. But this could create an opportunity for a parent to expand their child's vocabulary. It was a darling little story, overall. My little one enjoyed it.
I love the message in tbis book and my boys were fascinated by the story and illustrations! Very well written and good illustrations, kids enjoyed! As a daily struggle to get my kids to clean up, this is a good addition to their library.
