Pop!: The Invention of Bubble Gum, by Meghan McCarthy

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 2–4—This picture-book biography of the inventor of bubblegum is equal parts informative and entertaining. With appropriately simple but engaging prose, McCarthy relates how accountant Walter Diemer began "playing with different mixtures" in the late 1920s at the candy factory where he worked and eventually discovered a gum that bubbled. Judicious use of the inventor's own words helps to convey his enthusiastic personality. Along with Diemer's story, the author also covers a bit of gum history, the trial-and-error of invention, and the excitement that comes with a successful final product, all with just the right level of detail. Appealing acrylic cartoon illustrations fill this snippet of history with a sense of fun. The prominent curves of smiling faces and circular eyes and heads stand out against heavy lines and angles to fill each scene with playfulness that matches the subject. Rich colors capture the lighthearted joy of bubble blowers, both old and young, while contrasting darker tones reflect the drama of the inventor's lab work. A closing spread offers further information about Diemer's life, more fun facts about gum, and a full list of sources. Although the man will be unfamiliar to young readers, they know his invention well, and will appreciate his unexpected but well-earned success. McCarthy's on-target presentation makes this a strong choice for elementary biography assignments, booktalking, or just plain nonfiction fun.—Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR (c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist

What a good idea for a book! Kids who enjoy blowing gum bubbles may never have considered how the treat came to be, but here, in easy language and with amusing illustrations, McCarthy changes that. Starting at the Fleer Factory in 1927, the book introduces a young accountant, Walter Diemer, who knew more about numbers than gum. But when a lab is moved next door to his office, Diemer takes an interest in the invention of a new kind of gum. Eventually he develops bubble gum, tries it out at a mom-and-pop store to great success, and launches an enduring American icon. The acrylic paintings portray humor throughout, in part by peopling the book with googly-eyed characters who are often chewing a wad of gum. The story also touches briefly on the origin of gum, and the back matter—a short biography of Diemer, a fact list about gum, and a bibliography, including the sources from which McCarthy got her quotes—adds more info to the attractive package. Grades 1-3. --Ilene Cooper

This book is adorable. I use it with my students to lead up to a lesson on perseverance and goal setting.

This nonfiction story about the invention of bubble gum is beautifully illustrated and filled with factual information. My 8 year old grandson enjoyed it immensely.

My seven year old really enjoyed this!!!

The story is good, but the book cover came damaged and I wanted to give as a gift but can't.

This book ties in nicely with The Gum Chewing Rattler. Students enjoy learning about the invention of bubblegum with this book. It is presented in short but to point way with great illustrations. At the end they discover even more facts about bubblegum throughout our world's history.

Bought this for my son for a book summary. Thought he would like it since he loves bubble gum. He loved the book. It was easy to read and had some interesting facts in there.

This is a very high interest book. I read it to my 2nd graders on our "Bubble Day" and they really enjoyed it!

Poetry for Kids: Emily Dickinson

From School Library Journal

Gr 3 Up—This winning collection pairs 35 poems from Emily Dickinson's canon, arranged by season, with Davenier's rich, expressive artwork. The book opens with a biographical introduction to Dickinson by Snively, who is a guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum. Snively emphasizes Dickinson's fascination with science and the natural world, presenting her as a poet with a life "both quiet and busy"—a refreshing characterization. Pen and watercolor illustrations accompany each poem, vividly highlighting its subject while cleverly evoking less tangible imagery. For instance, a child dressed as a juggler leaps gracefully in the air amid spotted colors of gold and purple ("Blazing in gold and quenching in purple," reads the first line of the corresponding untitled poem). The child dances within a circular orb that emulates the sun, helping readers to see the riotous sunset that is alluded to in the rest of the poem. Definitions unobtrusively appear underneath each poem in small italics, as warranted. A helpful index, bibliography, and brief poetry analysis section, "What Emily Was Thinking," are included. Although the title of the poetry analysis is slightly misleading, since no one knows what the poet was thinking when she wrote certain lines, it is a useful guide for independent readers. While there are previously published volumes of Dickinson's work available (Frances Schoonmaker Bolin's Poetry for Young People: Emily Dickinson), this is a far superior selection. VERDICT A beautiful introduction to Dickinson for upper elementary poets.—Rachel Zuffa, Racine Public Library, WI

But, what sets this book apart are the whimsical illustrations. They bring the poems to life! Especially for children." - Melissa Taylor, Imagination Soup

Wanted to introduce poetry to my 8 yr old. This book is perfect! Poems she can relate to and we have a great time discussing what we got from the poems. Has been wonderful for teaching her how to build a picture with words and also how to think. I love the poems myself and find that I like reading them even when my daughter is doing something else.

Beautiful illustrations! The poems are grouped into the four seasons and her best loved poems are there with gorgeous watercolors to match. I bought this for a child in my life and ended up bribing it in to share with high school students.

Great intro to Emily for kids. Illustrations are sublime.

My granddaughter loves this book

I really like it, lots of great pictures, good information and it is a hardcover, I think it is the best Firebird book around. However the author refers to the Pontiac engine as a big block, many people do the same but among the Pontiac crowd sometimes that is not well perceived as there is just one size block. I don't care about that and the book is awesome anyway but it is something that people will notice for sure.

As others have written here, this is a beautiful coffee table book with great high-quality photos. There are some careless errors throughout, mostly in the photo captions. I was hoping for more "behind the scenes" info on the cars and on their development, but the author is mostly interested in relating year-to-year model changes and production totals. I also wish more cars were featured in the photos instead of multiple photos of the same cars. Most of the pictures are of special edition or one-off cars rather than the regular production vehicles. All in all, though, I am glad I purchased it, and I enjoyed reading it.

Great photos but some inaccuracies. For example, the interior photo of the 89 anniversary Trans Am is actually an 84 Trans Am. A 1982 Firebird is captioned as an 81. And so on.

My guy is a Pontiac collector and this book made for a great gift. Honestly, what do you get a man who owns 12 classic Pontiac’s??? The answer ... a cool book on the crap he already has. I think it kinda reinforces his confidence in all the money he has wasted ... I mean invested in the cars.

Well presented with many great pictures ranging from all of the years and the smokey trans am. If your into the birds this is a very good book to have.

Best book ever

If you have a car buff like I do it's a great gift. Quality to be a coffee table book.

A perfect gift for my husband.

I wish I had this little book when I started. It's very simple and only 42 page but it is very efficient. The first couple of examples - *transliteration* of English words in Persian !! - was weird at first sight. You will learn all the Persian letters perfectly - all forms - and how to pronounce them. You will learn a lot of common Persian words (including proper names). The author still managed to include a little glossary. The presentation is very clear and so are the fonts. It has many practice exercises (very simple ones but efficient ones). Memorization is everything and this helps tremendously. It will NOT teach you how to write the Persian script but that is not the goal here.Well done in 42 pages ! Strongly recommended.I recommend reading it everyday so that you can memorize plenty of common words.

I am about half-way through this book and it is INCREDIBLY helpful. I'm trying to learn Farsi on my own and even with other language learning books/software I still had some questions on reading Farsi, and this is a very easy-to-understand guide and makes the language seem very approachable.

Really great book! I learned how to speak Persian since I was born, but I was never taught reading and writing. This book is very short, but very thin too, so great to bring around. Don't expect any miracles or anything too substantive, but I'm sure it will be a great product for starting to learn to read :)

I have been struggling with learning to read Farsi. This is so good how it teaches you on the first day to read simple words. I may not read in 5 days very well but I now can sould out the words. Next step is to understand the words better. This is a good beginner book and I highly recommend it.

Good stuff

Excellent product.

This book is translated from one of a series originally published in 2013 in French by Histoire & Collections, and is authored by French military historian Yves Buffetaut. In size, heft, and paper quality it is similar to the many paperback volumes published by Osprey. It is well illustrated (which evidently is the point of the series) with contemporary black & white photographs, some of well-known images, but others not typically seen before. There are also color side profile views of a few Axis and Allied vehicle types, though these only identify the specific unit being illustrated and provide no technical stats. There are some unusual authorial perspectives as well as a few questionable assertions, and it is interesting to wonder if the French viewpoint influences this, for example:German war crimes during the campaign, especially against civilians, get proportionally more emphasis than in many other histories of this campaign. The notorious Malmedy Massacre is reported with some lurid details (true?) that I for one have never seen mentioned in numerous other histories.Omar Bradley is roundly criticized as being clueless on Day 1.The efforts of Montgomery and the British are cited but basically dismissed entirely.SS panzer troops are referred to (p. 33) as "stormtroopers" which purists will note is actually an accurate term only for the Nazi brown shirt militia. At one point (p. 123) German machine guns are referred to as "Spandaus" a term I've never seen used outside of WWI.The assertion is also made (p.17) that the Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle was "in widespread use in the volksgrenadier divisions" (indeed this is used as one of the cover photos), though every other reference I've ever seen says the deployment of this advanced weapon was almost exclusively on the Eastern front.Overall this is a decent pocket history of the Battle of the Bulge, but is not going to add appreciably to the knowledge of anyone already familiar with that campaign.

Are Women Human? Penetrating, Sensible, and Witty Essays on the Role of Women in Society, by Dorothy L. Sayers

From the Inside Flap

One of the first women to graduate from Oxford University, Dorothy Sayers pursued her goals whether or not what she wanted to do was ordinarily understood to be "feminine." Sayers did not devote a great deal of time to talking or writing about feminism, but she did explicitly address the issue of women's role in society in the two classic essays collected here.Central to Sayers's reflections is the conviction that both men and women are first of all human beings and must be regarded as essentially much more alike than different. We are to be true not so much to our sex as to our humanity. The proper role of both men and women, in her view, is to find the work for which they are suited and to do it.Though written several decades ago, these essays still offer in Sayers's piquant style a sensible and conciliatory approach to ongoing gender issues.

Anyone who has read Dorothy Sayers' mysteries featuring Lord Peter Wimsey should not be surprised that she seriously studied the roles assumed by people in her world and how those roles were viewed. She was one of the first women to graduate from Oxford and pursued goals that were not usually thought of as feminine. In the two essays in this 69-page pamphlet, Sayers responds to the idea that there are women's roles and men's roles. In Sayers' mind, being human was more important than being female or male. Based on that concept, she felt that individuals should pursue employment that best suits them without regard to societally based roles. In spite of progress that has been made since her day (these essays were originally published in a work titled Unpopular Opinions, copyright 1947) the subject is still of interest today. As far as women have come in the more than 60 years, there is still much discussion about whether or not women should enter traditionally male employment. What makes the idea of gender-specific roles almost laughable is that most of the male-dominated roles were originally those of women, from cooking to planting to serving at table. Her view of the history of these ideas has to make anyone pause and consider how much things have changed and whether assigning gender roles has truly been overcome.

Being a fan of Sayers' Lord Peter stories for many years, I decided to try her essays too. "Are Women Human?" consists of two essays--the title essay and another called "Human Not-Quite-Human." Both are well-written, and more importantly, well-reasoned. Reading her I found myself smacking my head more than once and thinking "Why did I never think of that? It makes such sense!" Sayers' arguments are both to the point and made with humor. She makes her points from history and from the Bible, and her warnings against generalizing are excellent. Not all men are the same. How can all women be? This is an easy, fun read from which one can take away a lot of excellent ideas.

A thought provoking pair of essays about a "women's" role. Written a couple of generations ago, it is still pertinent today. As a man who works in what was traditionally a women's field, I can appreciate where she is coming from.

Dorothy L. Sayers states Jesus' treatment of women so eloquently and objectively. There is a unique relationship Jesus had with women, and as much as some sects of religion try to downplay it, it will always shine through. Jesus valued women for more than their bodies, more than their gender, more than their motherhood and more than their housekeeping abilities. The church tries to limit women in so many ways, but hopefully they will see how much Jesus valued women and stop their segregation, pigeonholing, and putting women in ineffective boxes.

In Dorothy Sayers book "Are Women Human," which was a short story on how women were treated in England in the early 1900s. It was her thoughts on gender notions and how women were treated in society, but asserting why she was not a feminist to the cause. She argues that women and men are all humans that have the same needs, or different ones depending upon the individual. However, nevertheless it shows how women are associated and still compared to our male counter parts. Miss Sayers continues the argument that women and men are all humans that have the same needs, or different ones depending upon the individual. It's ok to have a certain amount of classification, which is necessary and presents no harm in doing so.In her second short story entitled "The Human-Not-Quite-Human, she focused on women acting more like men than anything else. She compared the human factor of Vir being the male, Femina the female and Homo being both male and female. She described that men have always dealt with Vir and Homo while women only dealt with Femina.Sayers argue the point that men (Vir) have always demanded that women (Femina) shall act lady like at all times; regardless if she's engaged or in a Homo relation or not. Men have always been attracted to women and will appropriate it without any regard to having scruples. Based on her concept of this last statement; it still holds true within today's society. However, if women acted as such; she labeled them as being unworthy or a scamp.Overall, both short stories were amusing and delightfully funny as Sayers poked fun about being human. Reading this book provided some insight on how things were then and now. It's worth reading.
