It's not the most breathtaking book of figure photography, but offers a lot to like. The models all seem to be twenty-something, slim anglos - not the only way for a lady to look good, but few other photographers go any farther afield than De Mulder does. Given his fashion-photo background, the variety of lingerie isn't much of a surprise either. For me, though, women's underwear is either about her comfort or it's gift wrap. This doesn't look comfy, and I'm really more interested in the gift than the wrapping. There's a modest bit of synthesexual, staged interest of one lady for another - pretty enough, but I can't see real warmth in it. And De Mulder's personality seems to come through in every image, in its costuming and staging. Again, for me, the model's personality means at least as much, and here seems buried under makeup, 'done' hair, and playtime undies. The collection is put together well, with rich B&W printing on heavy paper, bled to the edge of each page. The models are lovely, if a bit under-used, and the settings convey a rich sense of luxury. I like it, I really do. But the figure photo I remember most vividly centers on the model herself, a woman unique among all unique women, with a name and personality of her own. Outside of the cover photo and a few others, this seems more about who's behind the camera than who's in front of it.-- wiredweird

As with Mulder's previous works, all of which are VERY expensive now once they go out of print, this thing is enormous, 15" tall, 11" wide, and the photos are absolutely spectacular - he is truly one of the best out there at taking candid and brilliantly imaginative photos of gorgeous women. There are color and black-and-white photos in this volume, it is NOT just black-and-white. The majority of the photos are black-and-white, but there is some color, and it is very striking work considering he used film for these (if I understand correctly) and not digital. This one is guaranteed to satisfy, and I'm surprised it's still available at this price - buy it while you can, it won't be long until this will be a $200+ book - when you can find a clean copy. It's just spectacular, and if you're a camera buff or just love studying beautiful women in amazing settings, it just doesn't get any better than this.

Yes, heaven. Outstanding imagery. Outstanding locations, backgrounds, composition. Outstanding physical beauties. What's not to like? If you like nude fine art and glamour photography, this is your book. Images are classic. Nudity is mostly on the milder side with some things still left to the imagination.Highly recommended.

I nice coffee table book filled with beautiful images of beautiful women.

Beautiful Expression of the Female Form done in a Subtle but Assertive Way.

Absolutely beautiful and aesthetic photos. Very talented photographer

Great art.

This book does not accurately refer to Lincoln's death nor to the nature of the civil war - in fact, not only does it gloss over the 2 biggest pieces of his presidency, it is factually inaccurate about the civil war, leading children to believe Lincoln had no hand in it starting and only sought to end it by begging for piece. The "I Am" books by Brad Meltzer would be a better choice.

Well...I should have thought it through. Lincoln was around for the Civil War, which revolves around slavery...so if you don’t want to point out the concepts of racial diversity and slavery to your four-year-old, maybe wait on purchasing this book.

My children are fascinated by the Presidents of the United States. This book is great for kids learning about Abraham Lincoln. It kind of breezes over the whole death thing, if you are concerned about that.

My friend's kid now has a favorite president.

gave these to my kiddos for presidents day. they loved them.

Nice book for the classroom!

Very good book for my four year old who loves history.

I was happy to find that Little Golden Book has released introductory books about both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. I picked these up for my grandchildren to read when they are at my house. While the books are by different authors, they have the same illustrator and a similar feel to how the stories are told.My grandson, at 4 years old, is able to follow along with the story about President Lincoln. His sister, who is two years old, enjoys the illustrations and a shorter, verbal story. The book starts with Abraham Lincoln as a boy, his family life and how he improved his lot in life with self-education and hard, honest work. The story continues through his election, fight against slavery and the Civil War. It ends as the war ends and does not mention the manner of his death (which might be distressing for the age group this is aimed at.)There are also some interesting facts about President Lincoln listed in the back of the book. I find it a great introductory book about one of the greatest Presidents of the United States and appreciate the delicacy used in presenting both the war and Mr. Lincoln's death.

Prior to purchasing this book I posted a couple of comments below M. Gouin's three star review (who knocked it because it promotes milk as a healthy food). Now that I have had a chance to look it over I thought I would review it.Over-all I like the book and would recommend it for just about everyone. Each easy to read chapter focuses on one specific food with a recipe at the end of each chapter. I haven't tried the recipes yet, but they look pretty good. There are a lot of health books available offering nutritional information that usually focus on supplements. And while I am a proponent of supplements, this book focuses on the specifics of food sources which should be our primary source of sound nutrition. Man will never be able to extract or create anything as perfectly as nature. That said, I could not give it five stars because it comes from a highly commercialized viewpoint, very typical of Prevention Magazine (the editors of this book). IE: some of the otherwise great-looking recipes promote the use of microwaving - a very poor way to cook foods and one that should be avoided. It lists ingredients such as wheat germ - an old-school 'health food' known to go rancid so quickly that it may cause more problems than it's worth. But this is easy to ignore. The chapter on milk is lacking in any substantive recent research and, while not as old-school as 'milk is the devil' is still quite behind the latest info. (Please see my 2nd post under the comments of M. Gouin's review for details.)Finally, the binding of the book I received was pretty cheap. The covers are thin and curl back away from the pages after only a short time of use. The inside is printed on cheap newsprint with uneven ink distribution (going from normal to very light, page-to-page). Although the ISBN's are identical, apparently I purchased a "discounted" copy (@ $8.99) so maybe the higher-priced version will be a better quality, and for that reason the number of stars I gave it did not reflect this. Also worth noting is the description says it was updated in 2008, but the copyright inside the book shows 2007 (and is also reflected on the copyright page of the "look inside" view on the Amazon website).Other than this, I still recommend it because it contains a lot of useful information. Another book, perhaps a bit better and with a similar food-focus, is 'Secrets of Longevity: Hundreds of Ways to Live to Be 100' by Dr. Maoshing Ni.Jan, 2011 Update: I returned the softcover edition I mentioned above and replaced it with the hardcover book. The hardcover is pretty good for the $15 price (Especially when you consider the size of the book!)

My grandmother used to always say.. 'Food is Medicine!' I used to be a little snotty nosed sarcastic kid and say 'No grandma, medicine is medicine and food is food!' Yeah.. She was WISE. Many years later I know she is right. Many of our vitamins, phyto-nutrients, anti-oxidants and healing elements are derived from our FOOD.. Food IS medicine! Find out which foods are good for what ails you. Eat lots of raw, natural unprocessed foods. Not a tree-hugger. I am just a guy with a pot-belly learning to eat better at 35+. God provided a medicine cabinet full of nutrients in every meal we have with healthy foods. I am trying to do better!

This book is very helpful, I wanted to find out what foods I could eat to lower my blood pressure. I read that section, and I began eating the foods that was mentioned. My blood pressure was high and the medication helped very little, and I saw my doctor last month and he told me that if my blood pressure did not go lower, he was going to add another blood pressure medication. So, three days before I went back to see, I took the foods from the book and I made juice with them and I drank it for the three days. When they took my blood pressure the first time, it was 155/98. The nurse let me relax for five minutes, when she took it the second, it drop to 130/ 87, and they said that since it was going down, I could make an appointment in three to four months to see how it's doing. I'm glad I read this book and it prove to me that food could help improve your health and I will continue eating and making juice from the foods under high blood pressure, so when I make that next appointment I want to see if it has improved more. I have and I will recommend this book to anyone that wants the truth about food remedies.

Some of the nformation in this edition is obviously dated as even I had read elsewhere that some of the things they were recommending are no longer current with the current thought. Unfortunately for me, most of it advocates I should eat foods I don't like for health benefits. I wonder what your diet would be like if you tried to follow their "cures" for several health issues. Once again it point out there is no short cut to good health.

I am very interested in "natural' remedies, rather than perscriptions, which can so often cause side effects - not to mention an empty wallet. Because of arthritis in my hands, I was hoping to find suggestions to help - and did. I also found other things I did not know before about simple things - right in the pantry. An excellent book for those who are looking for 'alternatives' for costly and possibly dangerous perscription drugs.

I had an earlier version of this book that I had picked up at a second-hand store and loved what I read but there was informaton on some foods and categories missing that I was sure was due to the age of the book. Found the updated version on Amazon and purchased it. It had the updated info the other book was lacking. I am very pleased with this book and would purchase it again.

I recently had heart surgery, and this book has become my dietary bible. I'm reading it cover to cover like a novel, and I love the terrific advice I'm getting from it. I've totally changed my way of eating, thanks in great part to this book. Besides feeling better and lowering my cholesterol by 100 points, I've inadvertently lost 17 pounds in five months. This book is a jewel and would make a terrific gift for anyone you love and want to keep around for a while.

This book is worth every cent. I purchased mine from the publisher and spend quite a bit more than what it is offered here. I found the book so informative, with suggestions and advice, that really work, and work well. I bought one for a close friend who is very much into natural healing. This is just what the doctor ordered. I plan to purchase more books, later on, as gifts for family members and friends.

This was the text for a class I just finished. It's clearly written and does cover the new elements of the Java 6 platform. The author seems obsessed with AWT and applets in spite of neither having been used much this century. The book gives short shrift to swing. The book has nothing about java.sql and database connectivity. It touches briefly on servlets and ignores jsps.If you're interested in an introduction to the nuts and bolts of the language the book is OK, if not inspired. Don't expect it to serve as a reference; it's short on detail. I would have liked to have seen a stronger emphasis on OO design. Most of the code examples are written in a procedural style that wouldn't have been out of place in 1985. A positive for the code examples is that every one I've tried compiles and seems to run properly.

I learn't java using this book 8 years ago. With all the updates to Java 5, I wanted to know about generics and annotations etc. After failing to understand them using online materials, I turned to this book again. It does a wonderful job.I recommend this book for beginners. Don't be turned off by the huge book. The first few chapters, will give you all that you need.

I bought this book for a class i'm taking. We're roughly 1/4 of the way through the class, so i have not fully utilized the book. However, i would like to say that the early chapters do an EXCELLENT job of going over the basics in detail. For example: i had totally forgotten how most computers represent negative numbers (two's complement) and why. This book explained it to me in about a page and a half.Having already programmed in a few, similar languages, it was painful to read about how the 'if' statement works when i already know it. But i find myself reading the assigned chapters completely, just to make sure i don't miss some bit of knowledge that escaped me in the past, such as two's complement and the like.If you're new to programming, this book should help you out a lot in understanding why programs work the way they do. If you just need a book for a reference try looking here[...]and here[...]Most of your questions will probably be answered at these sights. You can even download the doc to have on your machine.[...]Best of luck!

I'm new to Java, actually this book has every thing that a beginner or intermediate programmer needs. The author didn't depend on the back knowledge base of the programmer, he assumes that you need every single information in Java.I think every Java beginner should own this book. The only thing that I didn't like in this book is that it doesn't cover one important part of Java, that is JDBC.

I do Java development for work so having a Java reference is useful. For the older version of Java I used the paperback book. But since I now have a Kindle, I purchased the newer reference in Kindle format. I like it for a couple of reasons - It was cheaper than the book, more convenient to carry when I travel and it's very easy to do quick searches in the reference to find what I need. When I got this, I read through it one time as a refresher. I now periodically use it to research items. But, over time, I am now finding it to be quicker to search online to find an answer about Java than it is to look at the Kindle and search. So I'm finding it to be less useful as time goes on. I still am glad I purchased it mainly so I can read through it when I'm not at my computer to keep my knowledge up.

I don't know, it's okay. Why are reference manuals always too much or too little? This one is too much.

a bit to much theory, but a very complete book

I am new to java but programmed in C before. Currently I use the Sun java tutorial and the contents of the above book to get into Java. Un some areas the Java tutorial is better understandable and in some others the above book. Using both gets most of the questions answered. The above book is quite good to have a fast reference to scan through, if one prefers to use a book than to sort it out on the computer.Unfortunately both are not providing real full propper understandable application examples when it gets more complicated, i.e. examples with proper multi thread operation with propper error handling, internationalization etc. These could be some kind of full applicatation covering not more than a few pages.Internationalisation seems not to be covered by the above book at all. I don't think it matters much if the software is used only locally but as soon as it is posted on the internet, one should have serious thoughts about it.

Review

Winner of the Mark Lynton History PrizeA Sunday Times (London) History Book of the Year 2017One of Kirkus Reviews' Best Biographies of 2017“Monumental . . . Drawing on an astonishing array of sources, Kotkin paints a richly variegated portrait, delving into Stalin’s peculiar personality even while situating him within the trajectories of Soviet history and totalitarianism more generally. . . Kotkin teases out his subject’s contradictions, revealing Stalin as both ideologue and opportunist, man of iron will and creature of the Soviet system, creep who apparently drove his wife to suicide and leader who inspired his people. . . will surely stand for years to come as a seminal account of some of the most devastating events of the 20th century.” —The New York Times Book Review“The book makes it mark through its theoretical sophistication, relentless argumentation, and sheer Stakhoanovite immensity. . . Kotkin also attempts to answer the chief philosophical question about Stalin: whether the monstrous regime he created was a function of his personality or of something inherent in Bolshevism.” — Keith Gessen, New Yorker “A masterpiece, surely one of the most remarkable books on 20th-century history to have been published in many years. It is not only the depth of research that takes the breath away; it is the scale and range of Kotkin’s framing of his subject and the acuity of his observations.” –Mark Mazower, The Guardian“[T]he second volume of what will surely rank as one of the greatest historical achievements of our age . . . few other biographies have so succeeded in showing how one man shaped his times, and how his times shaped him. This is a book not just about Stalin but about the entire spectrum of world affairs in the 1930s, its focus constantly shifting from the tiniest personal details to the grand sweep of international strategy. Kotkin’s project is the War and Peace of history: a book you fear you will never finish, but just cannot put down. The ending is perfectly judged. It is the night of Saturday, June 21, 1941. In his office, Stalin paces nervously, waiting for news. And on the border, Hitler’s war machine prepares to strike.” —The Times (London)“There have been many other biographies of Stalin, but none matches the range of information and analysis that animates Mr. Kotkin’s ambitious project.  Waiting for Hitler is biography and history on a grand scale – equal in scope to the enormity of the events it describes.” —Joshua Rubenstein, The Wall Street Journal“This has never been better nor more plausibly told than by Kotkin in this brilliant, compelling, propulsively written, magnificent tour de force . . . I eagerly await volume three.” —Simon Sebag Montefiore, Evening Standard   “It is the most gripping of reads, packed with epoch-shaking events and human tragedy. This volume sweeps through the collectivisation of agriculture and the mass famine of the early 1930s, the Great Terror of 1936-38, the outbreak of the second world war, the disastrous winter war against Finland, and the macabre diplomatic dance between Stalin and Hitler ahead of the Nazi invasion of June 1941. This is, as close as it is possible to imagine, the definitive biography of Stalin.” —Financial Times“A triumph, necessary reading for anyone hoping to make sense of Stalin and the Soviet Union.” —New Criterion“Kotkin, a Princeton history professor, has performed prodigies of research, wading through masses of previously inaccessible Soviet-era documents to produce what is surely the definitive portrait.” —American Conservative“It is unlikely we will soon have a biography the equal of Kotkin’s… We turn to a biography of this heft for the larger history, and for detailed analyses of that history, and Kotkin doesn’t disappoint… Thrilling and engrossing.” —Jewish Currents“Against all odds considering their grim topics, these Stalin volumes from Kotkin, in addition to being definitive, are the kind of infectiously entertaining that only comes from perfect match of topic and storyteller.” - Open Letters Monthly“A magisterial second entry in this multivolume biography. He integrates a massive body of newly available documents with extant scholarship, comprehensively detailing the development of the U.S.S.R. and the nature of Stalin’s rule. . . Kotkin’s account is a hefty challenge, but an eminently worthwhile one.” – Publishers Weekly, starred review“A well-written, finely detailed installment in a definitive biography—sure to receive many prize nominations this year.” – Kirkus, starred review

Volume II of Stephen Kotkin’s STALIN: Waiting for Hitler, 1929-1941 picks up where the scholar left off, cataloging the 20th century’s most successful and ruthless dictator’s consolidation of power. In urban areas this meant building factories and marginalizing enemies. In rural areas it included forced collectivization—undoing the land distribution of hundreds of millions of acres seized by peasants since the revolution. Most importantly it meant enforcing one man's interpretation of Communist doctrine upon 160 million people in a country that spanned 13 time zones. Dragging them into the 20th century and the first rank of world power by any means was no mean feat. Some would call it madness or impossible. Kotkin characterizes it as a triumph of will. The author expands upon Volume I’s paradoxes: there simply was never enough power to be had. As power is accumulated, so too are enemies. That requires more power, which requires more purging. It’s an unending cycle of exile, arrest or murder. Compounded by the sheer magnitude of his task (bringing Russia to the Modern Era in a decade rather than a generation) and the size of the country, the table is set for disasters of epic proportions. As his personality spirals into sociopathic paranoia, Stalin produces catastrophe after catastrophe that includes a body count that is truly mind-boggling. He also achieved some spectacular successes and the biography is richer for the fact that Kotkin is always prepared to give the devil his due. Waiting for Hitler is a triumph of scholarship over polemics. The book begins with the exile of Trotsky, and the “neutering” of Bukharin (an erstwhile ally), and exile of Rykov and Tomsky from the Politburo. Stalin is by 1929 already decisively moving against his enemies—rightists who support Lenin’s New Economic Plan or others simply charismatic and therefore a threat to the cult of Stalin (unofficially launched during his 50th birthday commemoration.) Stalin is a master at both pity and self-promotion—constantly bewailing the “attacks” of others while cutting them off at the knees. By 1930 Stalin has honed bloody skills he will use effectively for more than 20 additional years in power.Increasingly in the public imagination and Stalin’s mind, he and the state become one. An affront to Communism is an affront to Stalin and vice-versa. Therefore, the existence of Kulaks, well-to-do peasants who benefited from the breakup of aristocratic estates are deemed a “rightist” deviation—an obstacle to collectivization and must be eliminated. Indeed, any and all who resist are enemies of the state and its leader and must be forced to submit or eliminated. To the shock (and awe) of all, particularly those who supported Lenin’s more tolerant New Economic Plan, there simply was no middle ground.Forced collectivization, dislocation from the land, the ensuing peasant revolt (they slaughtered their livestock rather than let the state confiscate it) and bad harvests combined to pose a serious threat to Stalin’s power. Indeed, 1932 is one of the few times Stalin vacillates and backs down on policy, making course “adjustments”. Still, the whispers that Stalin had to go continued. To counter the whispers, purges are ratcheted up along with everyone's paranoia. The political corpses literally pileup by the tens and hundreds of thousands. These numbers are nothing in comparison to the starvation count in rural Ukraine, Georgia and Kazakh provinces. Seven to ten million estimated dead. Families cannibalizing family members. Orphans murdered to be eaten. All because Stalin refused to admit error and abandon the collective. Worse still he would not import grain to relieve the suffering because opponents of his regime would use it to depict communism as a failure. The author states unequivocally this was a disaster of one man's making and largely avoidable had Stalin even a smidgeon of compassion. While Kotkin’s detailed accounts make for great history it is both exhausting and at times numbing. Waiting for Hitler depressingly summons to mind Hannah Arendt’s remark about the banality of evil.By 1934-1935 the economy is on track in a remarkable comeback. It is around this time he begins to experience the adulation of the masses which Kotkin makes clear while exaggerated by the Party was also based on a fundamental truth--the Russian people loved Papa. In the cat bird's seat, Stalin strikes, remaking the Party entirely in his image, often using the assassination of Sergei Kirov as an excuse to cleanse. The 30s show trials section was most interesting and perhaps the most psychologically revealing. Murder and purging become spectacle, modern-day cousin to a Roman circus where the outcome of the show is a foregone conclusion. Witnessing the narcissistic preening, and his opponents robotic recanting (in the hopes of at least saving their families from the same fate) is fascinating in the way a train wreck is riveting. The carnage is horrific but you can’t look away. The sense of fear and intimidation is palpable. The third section of Waiting For Hitler covers the geopolitical scene of the 1930s with the particular focus on Germany and Hitler. Again, Kotkin's analysis is astute and multi-dimensional. Russia will be able to survive the Nazi onslaught to come in large part because of Stalin's remarkable modernization. However murdering your experienced generals and colonels in fits of political pique only a year or two before invasion does nothing to improve your odds of survival. Also, considering everyone knew it was just a matter of time, Russia was caught surprisingly flat-footed when the moment comes. Perhaps blitzkrieg doesn't translate to Russian.Like its predecessor, volume II is a scholarly work. It is accessible to the amateur historian but at 900 plus pages and with thousands and thousands of footnotes it is not any person's idea of a light read. It is a commitment. Its cast of characters is like a Cecil B. DeMille production and not always easy to keep straight. Also, the detail and documentation, necessary to scholarship is also occasionally a drag—more than once I found myself thinking “O god, another plenum; another purge; another footnote.” Stalin’s life provides new meaning to the cliché “been there; done that.” That said, Waiting For Hitler will be one of those essential tomes of 20th century politics and history. I am very, very glad I read it, and a little bit glad it’s over.

When I purchased this biography of Stalin, I was unaware that it was the second of a three volume work. Titled “Waiting for Hitler”, it covers the time from Stalin’s ascendancy to power after the death of Lenin, up to the launch of the German offensive against the USSR, code named Barbarossa.I have to say, this is not an easy, or enjoyable read. It very meticulously sets out the seemingly endless diplomatic and bureaucratic machinations carried out between 1929 and 1941. The first part details Stalin’s solidification of absolute power following the death of Lenin. It covers the dekulakization and collectivization of agriculture and the attendant famines that resulted. It then devolves into the terror that followed, in which Stalin murdered or exiled virtually every competent Soviet government official and military officer, in an orgy of paranoia fed violence. Page after page of Russian names soon blend together, making it impossible for me to follow. This middle part of the book is very slow going. Finally, with the arrival of Hitler on the international scene, my interest level rose. While I was certainly well versed in the basics of pre-World War II diplomacy, this book certainly covers all of the bases. The never ending diplomatic dances involving the British, French, Russians, Germans, Italians, Polish, Chinese (Nationalist and Communist) and Japanese (not to mention the various Balkan and Baltic states) frequently resulted in temporary non-aggression agreements and trade pacts between very strange bedfellows. That the Germans and Soviets could climb into bed together after a decade of demonization from both sides tells you the complexity of the diplomatic landscape. The Soviets were shipping raw materials to Germany and the Germans were shipping finished military hardware to the Soviet Union right up to the eve of Barbarossa. This is an extremely comprehensive and well researched piece of work. That, in itself, makes it somewhat difficult to wade through. I can usually read a book of this length (1,000 pages of text) in two weeks, three at most. It took me six weeks to finish this beast, albeit with two different four day breaks. I would recommend this work only to those with a pre-existing background or interest in the subject, looking for in-depth historical background and analysis. This is not pleasure reading. One thing that I appreciated was the author’s tendency to break each long chapter into numerous two or three page topics, each with their own descriptive heading, making it easy to find a stopping point each evening.

My wife and I have read the first volume of Kotkin's biography of Stalin. This book is the second of what will become his three-volume biography. We are only "informed public" readers and hence cannot comment on the historiography or professional skills brought to bear on this book.Nevertheless, we found it uniformly interesting and compelling. We learned a great deal about how Stalin maneuvered and displaced rivals, with a strategic, conniving, and murderous skill. The control of the political apparatus through the NKVD, the shredding of the intelligentsia, the Army, the kulaks, the establishing of the Gulag system, the kangaroo "courts" and show trials--these all amplified our background understanding of Russia. We were left "undecided" about Kotkin's interpretation of Stalin, because the author believes that historians have come to see Stalin as an unredeemed villain. Kotkin's belief is that Stalin represented and created something authentically Russian, a tragedy and a crime uniquely Russian, because Stalin alone could not have created the horrific period all on his own. Kotkin's interpretation of Stalin is more complex than the simple-sided archangel of hell, but it requires the reader to pause and consider this deeper understanding of Russian history.
