The Kabbalah is a very interesting work. It has been something that I have read bits and pieces of. But as I read in my 70's I really like it. It gives us a different way to think about God. The Christian faith talks about three persons of a trinity. But the Kabbalah has many faces or qualities of God. God is One in the Jewish faith, the Christian faith and the faith of Islam. And in the Bible and Tanek, we are created in God's image, Male & Female, God made us. In the Kabbalah The Creator has a partner the Shekhinah or feminine half of God. "The union of Shekhinah and the Tif'eret constitutes the focus of religious life." In the wisdom literature of the Bible, we see the feminine side of God in the Spirit.I think that anyone truly interested in the sacred Being. Will find a wealth of thought provoking material.

It is a beautiful artefact, presenting outstanding photographs coupled with insightful text from a variety of experts. The subject is a specialist angle on the work of Gianlorenzo Bernini, supreme maestro of the Italian Baroque. For around two centuries his work was out of fashion. Charles Dickens, for example, when visiting Rome, considered the angels on the Ponte Sant'Angelo to be hideous - in line with the taste of his contemporaries he disliked the swirling shapes and dramatic poses so expressive of emotion. However, art criticism has once more come to appreciate the extraordinary works of this prolific genius. Many books on his oeuvre have been published. What makes this one exceptional, is that it focuses not on Bernini's marble sculpture as such,but on the terracotta models he made in his workshop, where a large team of assistants helped him create the staggering output of artworks he produced in his lifetime. The Metropolitan Museum in New York presented an exhibition of the artist's models entitled: "Bernini: Sculpting in Clay," October 2012 to Jan 2013, which brought together 55 of the existing clay models from various museums. They range from small bozetti to larger modello piccolos and the occasional modello grande (life-size). A range of essays from Bernini experts provides commentary on and analysis of these models, relating them to questions and theories about the completed works, fountains, chapels and sculptures, for which they represent the artist's initial conception and more detailed vision for his stupendous works. Some still bear the imprint of the maestro's fingers as he modelled in the plastic material of clay his vision that had to be realised in marble. A must-have for Bernini lovers and students.

This book is a must for serious figurative clay sculptors. It is a rarity to have this much information and detail about the process used by Bernini or any other sculptor. The photography is exceptional in its detail and the overlay of tool direction. There is a clearer understanding of the creative role played by Bernini and his relationship with the highly skilled, talented "craftsmen" who executed his ideas.

Great resource for sculptors who want to see fingerprints and the bottoms and xrays of these clay figures. I saw the Bernini Museum in Rome. It is full of small terra cotta figures and have wanted to see them again. This book provides the best chance to see these amazing forms.

The photographs of the minutest detail of a sculpture are exciting for this sculptor to behold. The ability to peer inside or underneath one of Bernini's sculptures is truly fascinating for it beckons one to travel along with Bernini on his creative journey. I strongly recommend this book as an exciting way to understand the mind and creative methods of one of the greatest sculptors of all time!

This series is so amazing! My son does not really like to read, but he loves Guts and Glory. He said that it is like having a conversation... and he says he can tell Ben is so excited to tell the story. I love them just as much! It gets him to read and learn some history at the same time. I definately recommend!

My 10 year old son is not a fan of history books or non-fiction books in general. But he enjoys the Guts & Glory series. The authors do a nice job of using pop culture references to help young readers relate to the content.

This book was a great guide to the Dominican Republic and gave me a quick way to get a solid background on the DR prior to a vacation in the next couple of months. The information in the guide was very practical and user-friendly. I also appreciated the information that was specific to different locales (I am specifically interested in Punta Cana so it was great to understand amenities and events in that area). The section on learning about the food was excellent as well.

Throughout the past 20 years, I have traveled to 43 countries on 5 continents with a trusted lonely planet in my hand. These guidebooks are more for those that wish to get their hands a little dirty and immerse yourself inside the culture. If you happen to travel in a resort-like fashion, I would still recommend them for day trips that will take you outside the confines of your comfort zone beyond the walls. With the country's detailed history, language guide, and general culture chapters, I have repeatedly been thrown into life changing experiences around the globe. Hands down, you truly can't go wrong.

Have been a loyal Lonely Planet reader for many years now. Although I searched the web, this book has it all in one place and is still the best travel guide. Keep it up, LP!

I don't know exactly what I should do to light whatever interior scene I'm working on, and I scramble to try to be interesting, but usually my scenes are either boring or weird. I need more experience. The diagrams and pictures are detailed and precised, showing different approaches to lighting and image control. No other book gives you the inside to the minds of some of the greatest filmmakers around! I would not doubt about gettting it!

This is a fun compilation of what exactly makes one a Catholic Hipster.Each 'chapter' is broken into 4 subsections: Random information from the author, a "Cool Saint," a forgotten prayer (typically related to the saint and/or topic), and an activity for the reader. For the authors whose voices I know (radio, podcasts, etc.), I could even hear them in my head as I read.A few things jumped out to me:- Saint Epaphras, whom I didn't think I'd ever heard of, is in the Bible.- Sergio Bermudez's Catholic slang made me laugh.- The Francis de Sales prayer- Melissa Keating's tunes (which I need to look more into)- Sarah Vabulas' info on scapulars- Lisa Hende's must-have apps (some of which I have, and one I downloaded to replace another app)- Anna Mitchell's info on the old calendar (which I didn't even know about...and a lot of the info was new to me)- Arlene Spencey on being a Catholic in a Protestant private school (a story I freaking loved)I've learned I'm not a Catholic hipster and yet I wouldn't feel out of place among them, standing off to the side and laughing along with the conversations.And then leaning in to learn more about my faith.

If you are looking for a fun read that still manages to remind you of what makes being Catholic cool yet countercultural, this is the book for you! And you do not need to be a hipster to enjoy it.I found this gem of a book, co-written by about 15 bloggers and authors, to be a wonderful collection of Catholic devotions and practices, with each chapter liberally supported by a classic prayer, a short biography of a saint related to the topic at hand and an activity that will help you put your faith in action.Each section starts with the word “rediscover” … Rediscover the Attitude, Rediscover the Stuff, Rediscover the Life, and Rediscover the Attraction. The book reminds us of the who we are in God’s eyes – that we are children of God and that we loved. It reminds us about the catholic practices that may have been left by the wayside but are being rediscovered by a new generation: from novenas, to chaplets to relics and brewing beer, growing beards and wearing sandals … all the while not being afraid of having a good sense of humor and a good dose of laughter with friends.If you think our faith is boring, or irrelevant or just passé, check out this fun book, and rediscover (or discover for the first time) what continues to draw young people to this beautiful and ancient faith.

This book is full of fun, thoughtful essays that have me laughing, praying differently, looking up Catholic slang (still not sure which ones were included as a joke. My guess is the disclaimer was a red herring) and detouring my route to visit the nearest shrine. It might be time to dig out the ol' rosary and scapular again...

Let's face it...there's no good way to give a completely unbiased opinion about religion or hipsters. I went into this book with a disgruntled opinion based on childhood experiences regarding those I saw within places of power in the Catholic church abusing their power, and when I think "hipster"...I just cringe.So how did I walk away giving it a four out of five star review? Well, honestly, because it jolted a lot of things into place for me:1) It reminded me that what drove me from Catholicism was the actions of a few select people, not the religion as a whole. As the only Christian religion to recognize saints, there's a lot of great people in the religion, too. I loved the stories of the different saints as a child, and this book helped remind me of some of those.2) Each section of the book includes a "forgotten prayer". Some of them were absolutely beautiful to me and touched things I should be saying to God on a regular basis, even as a Christian who isn't Catholic.3) Each section also included an activity to further a reader's understanding of the chapter. Some of them were easier to accomplish than others, but it was engaging to follow those along.4) The book made it incredibly easy to see links between Christianity, and Catholicism, and many of the "hipster traits". From sandaled feet to scraggly beards, the reasons behind them are actually in the BIBLE, and it's a conversation starter right there before you.

Good content, However, to make it more user friendly and valuable, this work needs an index! If the goal is to make readers more aware of valuable prayers and Catholic saints, one should be able to find them quickly.

The handbook approach is very sincere and follows our Catholic Religion - but in a creative way for the younger people of faith.This was purchased for one of our millennial relatives but it is so good, we haven't decided which one should receive it.

Entertaining and informative book - especially enjoy some of the obscure saints. I like the variety of contributors and think this is a good companion to the podcast that Tighe is part of.

Gave this as a gift to my son who is probably the most hipster-y Catholic you can imagine and he really liked it! He said he was surprised that it had some good stuff in there that he didn't know.
