This is an absolutely fascinating book. The book is very well put together and very well written. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that is experiencing health issues as an adult that they have not been able to solve through conventional medicine. Just...a really powerful book that clears up soooo many things.

If as a child you have ever suffered physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, divorce, hunger, bullying, or lived with family members who were suicidal, imprisoned, mentally ill, from a dysfunctional family, or abused drugs, then this book is a must read. Your health depends on it. Donna Nakazawa unpacks one of the greatest discoveries in modern psychology and medicine today, the groundbreaking study on Adverse Childhood Experiences by medical doctor Vincent Felitti and Robert Anda. If you have experienced any of the 10 ACE's above, then your health is already at risk. I have personally experienced 8 out of 10 ACE's and thus identified with everything in this book. I have suffered from chronic headaches, chronic fatigue, heart disease, BPH, gynecomastia, and bilirubin, resulting from trauma. I was on Amitriptyline, Venlafaxine, Tizanidine, Lipitor, Hydrocodone, and NSAID's for years, and nothing helped until I began EMDR therapy for trauma as described in this book. The headaches and illnesses are largely gone.Through scientific research, Nakazawa demonstrates how our genes are changed based on our childhood trauma, known as epigenetic imprinting and methylation. The result is an inflammation of the organs through cortisol and cytokines, leading to inevitable illnesses in our adulthood. The science is virtually incontrovertible, and the research is extensive. Each chapter illustrates this process with real life stories that grip the heart yet give hope. If you've suffered childhood trauma, then you will certainly identify with the research and stories here. This is a profound and enlightening book. The last three chapters give cutting-edge information on how to begin a pathway towards recovery, from personal to professional approaches. This is one of the best books I have ever read on childhood trauma (see also The Body Keeps the Score by Van Der Kolk). It is very well written and researched. I highly recommend it.

I think this is a good book for research and it thoroughly satisfied my research needs on the damage that ACE's can cause to the body, I however do not see this book as a fitting guide for survivors on how to heal. As a survivor myself, I found this book as something I had to take in stride to not become overwhelmed by the amount of negative outcomes or to begin viewing myself as a subject. There is way too much of that type of material to get through before reaching the tools offered at the end. I would recommend this for individuals on the outside looking in who want to learn more about what ACE's can lead to.

The book does outline the effects of childhood trauma as they manifest in childhood and later in life, but if you are a trauma survivor you already know this. And the "healing" the author recommends are what every self help book recommends: yoga, mindfulness,journaling, bodywork, etc... As someone trained to teach vipassana meditation, I am consistently appalled at the trend in recommending mindfulness as a panacea for nearly everything. Yes, meditation has benefits, but trauma will not be resolved through mindfulness. For some trauma survivors meditation can make things worse. The author also recommends " forgiveness". This is a sensitive topic for trauma survivors, because many have endured behaviors that are wholly unforgivable, and should remain so. If you are looking for insight into healing trauma, I highly recommend Pete Walker's CPTSD: From Surviving to Thriving.

Since 2012, I have been trying to get a diagnosis for my health issues. I have subjected myself to ultra sounds, CT scans, Pet Scans, MRI’s, Colonoscopy, and Endoscopy and a small bowel follow through. My gastroenterologist was befuddled and finally suggested that there maybe a mind-body connection. He asked me to keep a diary of each time one of my health episodes flared up. It turns out I was having flashbacks to emotional neglect and physical punishment at my mother’s hand. These scenes would flood back. It was crippling. Nakazawa’s book is the BEST and most comprehensive view of the importance of the ACE studies and the ability to heal from a negative upbringing. My ACE score is a 4.I now see options to heal and recover. The book shares a multitude of ideas. I have been receiving EMDR with my therapist. I am ever hopeful there is a path to freedom! I highly recommend this book.

Its was obviously the author was very uneducated when she said loose power gave more coverage than pressed, when pressed worker is usually foundation powder which is made to be medium to full coverage generally unless it's transparent which is not very common for pressed but most loose powder in transparent or only very lightly tinted to avoid a white cast in flash photography. Also the majority of people agree that rarely should the brushes that some with makeup should be used but again it's all up to preference. I could go on for hours about this but to save everyone time ill just say, I really don't recommend this book instead I recommend this video for beginners, (...)

About the Author

Brad Lancaster is a dynamic teacher, consultant, and designer of regenerative systems. He’s taught throughout North America, Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia; worked with the City of Tucson and other municipalities to legalize, incentivize, and provide guidance on water-harvesting systems, demonstration sites, and policy; and designed edible rain-irrigated landscapes doubling as flood control and community-building strategies for housing developments and neighborhoods. Brad’s aim is always to boost communities’ true health and wealth by using simple overlapping strategies to augment the region’s hydrology, ecosystems, and economies―living systems upon which we depend. Brad lives his talk on an oasis-like demonstration site he created with his brother’s family in downtown Tucson, Arizona. On this eighth of an acre and surrounding public right-of-way, they harvest 100,000 gallons of rainwater a year where just 11 inches per year fall from the sky. Brad is motivated in his work by the tens of thousands of people he has helped inspire to do likewise, go further, and continue our collective evolution.

In our area of central Texas, we can get 12" of rain in 48 hrs, and 4" in 2 hrs. Brad's book is my bible for how to control water flow during major rain events, how to capture as much rainwater as possible in the soil, and how feed lots of plants only with rain. I read this book, observed the flow of water during light and heavy rains, started small projects, and started at the highest elevation on the land. I used rock berms where water volume was high, I used earth berms and swales where I wanted to plant trees and vegetables and filled the swales with wood chips to reduce evaporation, and I used fallen trees on contour to slow the flow of water in the undeveloped forested areas. I still refer to this book often, especially before starting any new garden area or water harvesting project. Terraced garden on slope near the driveway is next and Brad explains how to do this too. The examples in the book are great and very helpful. The writing is clear and informative. I highly recommend this book. -- Jim

This series is fantastic. I can't wait to start putting these ideas into action (yes, I said you can implement now, but my land is 1000 miles away...) Brad writes very clearly and with a good balance of background/philosophy, anecdotes and examples, and practical, technical information. He has a no-nonsense approach that anyone can easily and cheaply implement. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is that there's a bit too much overlap between Vol. 1 and Vol 2. You could almost maybe just go straight to Vol. 2 if you already have bought in to the concept. (I have not gotten Vol. 3 yet because I'm not ready to think about cisterns.)

Volume 1 is a better book. This one doesn't add much at all to volume 1 and merely repeats. I have 30 acres I want to improve and this didn't add much helpful information for larger scale harvesting.

There are some books that are SO good that it is basically impossible to describe how well-written and thorough they are, and thus, there really isn't a need to say much more. Both volumes are THE bible of rainwater harvesting -- period. If you ever wanted to know anything and everything about this subject, here you go. PLEASE buy both volumes! Enough said.

In his second volume, Mr. Lancaster shows us earthworks--passive methods of capturing, spreading and sinking rainwater. Anyone can enhance and enrich the soil with simple methods and tools. Lancaster says, "I give thee thy shovel," (p.25). Real-life examples of these methods used worldwide accomplish many goals: turning water scarcity into water abundance; reducing the use of fossil fuels to clean and deliver water, increase the presence of native plants, and to increase food production.I intend to create a demonstration project on my own homestead, then incorporate some of these methods during my return mission trip to Sierra Leone, Africa. Every little drop counts!

If you already know you want to do this stuff, just skip to this book. If you're new to the whole rainwater saving thing, and you want to know what it's all about, start with Volume 1.

great book and well worth the price. gets you thinking about your own yard/home and how to act locally yet think globally. the book is easy and quick to read with plenty of diagrams. "real life success stories" are a nice touch to emphasize how each water saving earthwork can be used. i will keep this book for reference always. he does a good job explaining the theory behind why different earthworks should be used in different situations. the only negative thing i would say is that sometimes he makes things sound easier or maybe more straightforward than i think they would be to build/implement... to his defense he does refer people to professionals if they are in doubt. inspires hope for conservative living in a dry climate

This is the best VoiceXML book I've seen. Most VoiceXML books try to do too much: talk about voice hardware, telephony, the history of voice, tts, as well as be a VoiceXML reference. The weakness of these books is that one or more of these sections reveals that the authors do not really command the knowledge needed to make these sections useful. This book also attempts to do these things, but for the most part is able to carry it off.If you're looking for a reference, this is the book to get. The reference section is current VoiceXML 2.0 (October 2001), which is an advantage in and of itself. But the real strength of the reference section is its depth. Each element, (e.g., , , ) has an entry for syntax (how to invoke the element), a description (what the element is used for), a thorough discussion of its attributes (that is, a description of the attribute), a usage statement (the elements parents and children), and an example (a snipet of complete code that uses the element). The examples and discussion of attributes really set this book apart from its peers.There is a brief discussion of the architecture of a VoiceXML app, and a couple of paragraphs discussing the differences between VoiceXML 1.0 and 2.0.The book also gives, contrary to my expectations, a history of the voice industry, a history of VoiceXML, and a discussion of players in the industry. What makes this book's treatment of these topics unusual is that the authors (particularly Kunins, I suspect) actually know these fields. I don't normally want these sections in a reference book (it just adds bulk around the section I really want) but I found them quite compelling here. I learned quite a bit from reading them.The book also contains sections on Dynamic VoiceXML, Security, Voice App Life Cycle, VUI Design, the Future of VoiceXML, and a case study. I haven't read these sections yet, so I can't comment on them. I do know, however, that the sections I have read are sufficiently superior to make this THE VoiceXML book on their own.If I were to criticize the book, I would fault the authors' lavish praise of TellMe (this is minor and not unexpected) and the examples in the reference section. The examples are quite good for someone learning VoiceXML, and the authors are commended for including them. The fault (albeit a minor one) is that they are fairly vanilla. So, while I would have preferred more examples, I concede that such examples would make the book much larger and the inclusion of "advanced" examples to the exclusion of "canonical" examples would have made them less useful to developers learning VoiceXML.Overall, if you are going to own one VoiceXML reference, THIS should be that one.

I am very happy with the mix of content, summaries of important concepts such as linguistics, speech recognition, and speech synthesis, as well as the in-your-face examples and complete reference. In fact, I liked it so much that I will probably be using it as a standard reference in my company's VoiceXML training course.

Agree with other reviewers. A thorough and detailed reference on VoiceXML and voice application development. I wish authors had put VoiceXML 2.0 reference on some website (though examples are available on the CD). Also liked the tips throughout the book on VUI. It is the most important aspect of voice application development and the authors kept emphasizing that through the entire book with examples. Excellent.

This book is an excellent resource for a VoiceXML developer. It covers a wide range of topics in detail and has some excellent VUI design tips. I love the cross reference of voice technology companies and the services that they provide.

Actually the book is almost 500 pages and with small fonts and tight spacing, this book is full of useful tips and suggestions on wide range of topics. Probably the only book on 2.0 out there (others hardly touch on 2.0). Very good reference chapter. Other chapters provide good coverage as well. Thumbs up from me.

The book covers wide range of topics. The book is an excellent hands on guide to build voice applications with Voice XML 2.0. I liked the VUI design tips throughout the book. Great job!
