I've read over 100 books via Kindle in the past 3 years, but this is my first review. For me to write one now is indicative of my strong feelings about this book.Ms. Monday's book most definitely is aptly named... Although that may merely be because I was unable to even find another romance about a black vampire! (If you know of any good ones, let me know!)That said, in comparison to other vampire romances, this one certainly did not follow the typical "Alpha male + damsel = happily ever after" formula. It was thoughtful, had multidimensional and multicultural characters with real character development, even if it felt like too many characters at first. At times, I felt that it missed opportunities to embellish action with more colorful language--but it was so long, it would have been two books if she'd added anything else.In comparison to the Black novel genre, it stuck to too many stereotypes of the "church-girl" and the "I don't need a man to be happy" variety. Paradoxically, it was both limited by and liberated through its historical positioning in the Black experience/culture. Although I agree the novel could use another round of editing, including reconciliation of verb tense (is the story in the present? It reads more smoothly when it accidentally slips into past tense) I honestly couldn't put it down. I read avidly for two days smiling, laughing, groaning, rolling my eyes, frowning in concentration and sucking my teeth in frustration. I could spend a page and a half critiquing and praising the book. The bottom line is that while this book isn't going to be a classic; it is courageous and willing to step out on a limb when no one else is out there. Thanks to Ms. Monday for entertaining me, and if you are thinking of buying this, go ahead and spend the six bucks; it's worth it.
WOW! is all I can say. Ms. Monday slam dunked this one! The characters and their back stories were great and the writing of this story kept me clinging to this story. I just got into a squabble with an author who portrayed themselves to be a black paranormal writer but fell flat. This is a true Black vampire story and I wish it was a sequel to this story since I loved the main character Darius Champion. I highly recommend this read to those that want to read about Black vampires!
1. The author definitely needs to find a better editor. There were countless "it's" instead of "its", and "there" instead of "their", and even a "monotonous" relationship instead of what was probably meant to be a "monogamous" relationship (Kindle location 9333)-- unless the couple was truly bored after reading this book.2. The characters all started to sound the same, speaking in the same style. For instance, everyone, from the supposedly old-world vamps to the refined and sophisticated church-going Rochelle, to the former drug addicts and bikers in the book, all said "whaddya" and other slang. There were so many different and interesting types of characters in this book with different backgrounds that one would have expected a more rich and diverse use of language.3. Finally, please check your facts! The Cabrini-Green projects are not located on the South Side of Chicago! (Kindle location 8108)
This was a ok read....got a little boring from time to time. But other than that ok was just okay.
I am glad I got this one to read free, I just couldn't finish it. At 72% (by skipping pages) I just wanted to read something else. The story was slow and all over the place, too many extra words. It needed to be edited down into a tight cohesive story- I wanted to know the ending, but I couldn't force myself to muddle through. It could have been good- it just wasn't. Save your money...
Great story! Need more like Darius Champion! Great to read black vampire books... Not as gruesome as I thought it would be
Some unexpected turns and twists. Miss Monday has a bright future. At times I thought the story would never end, but I liked the finishing touches.
