The "Innovator's" series has proved a wonderful addition to the business literature. By focusing on step changes the series has caused many of us to rethink how best to make process changes in business. The Innovator's Method is by far the most practical of the entire set. It assumes that the reader understands the nature of disruptive change and wants more guidance on how to make it happen. The authors do not disappoint. Using case studies from Intuit and others, they outline the steps involved in creating disruptive change successfully. They especially emphasize the role of prototyping as the mechanism to insure that the idea in its formative stage will actually work.This book would have received five stars. However, it contains almost no information on the human aspect of creating these changes within an organization. Maybe that's next in line.

This book is a fantastic addition to any Lean Startup library. What I like about the book is that it brings concrete and clear guidelines to execute innovation inside your organization. Also it blends Design Thinking, Jobs to be Done and Lean startup tips and tricks. It's really an end to end process for creating, refining and bringing great ideas to market.The book uses the most important literature about Innovation, Jobs to be done, Design Thinking, Business Model generation and Lean Startup. It is also based on lots of personal interviews with entrepreneurs and teams executing innovative projects inside organizations. Intuit and Unilever are both examples of orgs used as examples. Great read and very practical guide!

So I have never really been really involved with innovation or even business and entrepreneurship for that matter. I first began reading and thinking about it when I started talking to my cousin about it. He talked to me about innovation and the role that he thought it should play in businesses. And to be honest. It seemed like an obvious idea. Of course being innovative was important. But then when I thought about it more, I had no idea how to be innovative. I had no idea how to change the way I thought and expand on the ideas that were in my mind. I knew what needed to be done, but no idea how to do it. And even more so, no idea how to apply that to any type of organization. And that is where this book came in for me.The Innovator's Method builds upon the ideas presented in the Innovators DNA and expands those into a useful tool kit, a step by step process if you will on how to add innovation to your own organization. Innovators DNA told you that everyone can be innovative and even told you how to get to that point. Then Innovator's Method follows it up with telling you exactly how to apply those new skills of innovation to your own organization or business. It presented many of the ideas in a clear way, so that someone with little business experience (like my self) could still understand the topics and grasp the ideas with a little bit of thinking.

The authors have created a unified approach to bringing innovation to market. They integrate several of the leading techniques such as design thinking and lean startups into a very practical methodology. It is written in a style that will be accessible to a broad audience of colleagues interested in how to tackle the launch of new business ventures, lines of service, and products. I highly recommend this book to managers who want to bring structure to an inherently messy, uncertain, and iterative process.

I enjoyed the real life examples that were discussed in the book.

As others have stated, it's a great book about managing innovation. Not only that it's comprehensive and it offers a structured approach to deal with the uncertainties of innovation, but also easy to read and gives lots of good examples that really solidify the concepts. I also like how it refers to other well-written books as well, including The Lean Startup, and how the materials here complement those books.

As an aspiring mosaic artist, I find that work and life too often derail my plans to produce more art. Without consistent practice, I've wondered how I can ever hope to advance my skill level and carve out my own style. Then I bought Martin Cheek's new book.The title suggests that the focus will be on learning about and incorporating glass fusions. In that respect, the title is misleading - because the book is so much more than that! Within the 17 chapters, Martin covers specific approaches to developing a mosaic. While he addresses glass fusions and shows many inspiring illustrations that incorporate them, he doesn't limit anyone's approach to their use. At the end of each lesson, he issues a challenge to the reader to produce a mosaic that uses the approach described.What sparked my resolve to accept the challenges was a little note that appeared on the bottom of page 159. Martin offers to issue a certificate of completion to anyone who completes the challenges and has passed his review of the pieces, photos of which are posted to one's own Facebook page.I haven't been the same since I read that. For the thirty or so bucks I paid to buy this book, I get what amounts to a mosaic course taught by a world-renowned mosaic artist. My mind hasn't stopped spinning with ideas; I've completed four assignments already, have begun the fifth, and am about to order materials for the next three. This process is pushing me to try new techniques, materials, and subjects, and I'm committed to completing the challenges this year.A brilliant example of a "call to action," this book is giving me the kick in the rear I needed. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired, enhance skills, and possibly discover that you have a style all your own.

I think this book is just what was needed in today's advanced mosaic hobbyist community. So many start from scratch mosaicists have needed such an instructional book devoted to helping emerging and experienced mosaic enthusiasts alike reach that higher level in their artwork. Chapter by chapter, the author takes the reader through multiple challenges, as only a classically trained artist can do, and here, his experience and true love for this artform take charge of the readers attention. I disagree with the reviewer who feels the title is misleading - I suppose if the book was called "How to Make Glass Fusions" it would be misleading, but that is not the title of this book. I have found this book to be beautiful, and full of inspiration and creativity of the author's own artistic genius. A must have for any mosaic enthusiasts library.

A good book that gives an inside perspective on the Bhopal gas tragedy. For someone like me who is not a chemist by training, some more detail would have helped in interpreting the data, especially the tables in the appendix. It would have also made it easier to understand and explain to someone else what he says the flaws in the official analysis are, especially because the author's views would be confronting a skeptical audience. It could also do with an update in light of more recent court verdicts.

This book went through the details for this event. There is a good deal of information about the disaster from people who don't know anything about the plant operations. D'Silva knows this plant and gave an insider's view. It was exactly what I was looking for to see what the root causes were and how this kind of thing can be avoided in the future.

This book is a must read for those interested in the worlds' worst peacetime industrial accident in India in 1984. I could not put it down! A gripping and enthralling story. Don't miss out on this one.

D'Silva'a account of the Bhopal MIC tragedy was clear and concise. The case is now closed. He informs us of the background of the building of the plant, the negotiations and contract with the Indian government, and critical decisions made that affected the profitability of the operations. Several circumstances (political upheaval, worker discontent, plant maintenance negligence, cost cutting, imminent plant shutdown) conspired to creat a recipe for disaster. The tragedy that followed the act of sabotage could have been averted if the proper safeguards were in place. D'Silva adeptly highlights crucial technical, business, legal, and political aspects of the rise and fall of Union Carbide India Limited's pesticide business, the release of methyl isocyanate that smothered the lives of so many innocent people, and the bungled aftermath. He conveys the conclusive results of the chemical investigation by Union Carbide Agricultural Products Company, Inc. of the MIC storage tank residue after the incident, previously published in peer-reviewed technical journals, in terms easily understood by the general public.D'Silva maintains a tone of compassion throughout his narrative. His many conversations with victims of the tragedy remind us of the huge moral cost and its unimaginable toll on human life and suffering. He should be very proud of his successful ten-year effort to get the true story told- it's one that's worth listening to.D'Silva will donate all proceeds from the book to charitable and educational institutions in India.

The Black Box of Bhopal, by Dr. Themistocles D'Silva, is a clear and comprehensive account of the Bhopal plant disaster, including the plant's origin, the gaseous decomposition and its analysis and social and legal events following. Dr. D'Silva was a member of the scientific team that investigated the event and analyzed the contents of fateful Tank # 610(along with Tank # 611, the "black boxes").From a series of over 500 experiments, the team was able to reproduce the exact decomposition on a laboratory scale and establish the initial conditions. D'Silva's conclusions, borne out by two independent studies, was that the gaseous emission resulted from introduction of a massive volume of water into the methyl isocyanate of Tank # 610. The implications of the water introduction are discussed. This book is unique as the first account of the incident by an organic chemist with both opportunity and background to uncover the event's causes and explain them in detail. Extensive footnoting of technical and press reports preserves the high readability of the text, never obscured by its extensive documentation. Dr. D'Silva is an internationally-recognized expert in carbamate and methyl isocyanate chemistry and his book is essential for an understanding of the Bhopal tragedy. David T. Manning, Ph.D.

The author D'Silva worked for Union Carbide for 20 years and investigated the Bhopal case while employed by the company. This "thoroughly researched work" doesn't mention the Amnesty International Report on the disaster and carefully sidesteps issues that might imply Union Carbide's culpability. The 1984 Disaster killed more than 22,000 people according to Amnesty in a catastrophic gas leak in which safety systems completely failed at the plant. Regardless if he was paid by the company directly or just wants to defend the company out of loyalty, D'Silva bases much of his work on documents Union Carbide's defense used itself in court. He seems to want to shift as much blame as possible onto the Indian government and minimizes the numbers of dead and the ongoing health impacts of the leakWhile the Indian government is far from blameless, Union Carbide India Limited was majority owned by the US Union Carbide Company when it gassed the city of Bhopal. If D'Silva believed advocates for the survivors such as Amnesty International are lying, he should have addressed this directly in the book. He doesn't explain why the company never presented a possible saboteur in court, if that was the cause of the disaster as UCC claimed. And he doesn't explain why Union Carbide refuses to show up to face criminal charges to this day. One is left to wonder if the evidence is so good, why doesn't UCC (now owned by Dow) prove it in court?

Florence captures the conflict between billionaires looking to polish their images, the scientists clamoring for the project to be competed, and the most interesting group of all, the engineers simply trying to build a machine utterly distinct from anything that had gone before. To use Tom Wolfe's phrase, they all collaborate to "push the envelope" and build something utterly unique for an esoteric scientific purpose. The story flows from corporate boardrooms to vast laboratories expending as much money as fuel to attempt a seductively elegant but impossible process for casting quartz, to the mundane synthesis of the common pie pan or baby bottle with the grandest scale glass object to be built. The character of the utterly random band that finally designs the telescope, none of them actual telescope experts, reads like an international band of technologically adept brothers, working wonders with steel, glass, copper, Flying Horse Telescope Oil, and an intuitive feel for the behavior of glass on a microscopic scale, all fighting for that perfect moment. First Light. Beautiful and inspiring book.

I grew up knowing about the 200-inch telescope, but knew little about the details of us design or construction. This is a delightful tale of driven scientists, engineers, and technicians who spend decades building the “Perfect Machine.”I’d like to give 4.5 stars, but that’s not an option. Two complaints keep this review from awarding five stars:1) On the Kindle version, the footnotes are out of sync. Clicking on a footnote asterisk takes to to the wrong note, and you have to scroll dozens of pages away to find the right one.2) I know it would have added to the production cost and complexity, but this book just cries out for a good section of photographs, sketches, maps, etc. The author’s best efforts at describing the telescope’s mechanisms are not as effective as ten minutes browsing images on the Web.

First, let me strongly recommend that you go to atlasobscura.com and search for this article: Where on Earth Can You Put a Giant Telescope? Very informative as well as up to date (November 2018).Next, Ronald Florence, thank you for wonderful memories of a man not mentioned in your excellent book -- my dad, E.E. Shea. As a purchasing agent in the Astrophysics Machine Shop, Al Shea was thrilled by the 100-inch Mount Wilson telescope and grateful to be part of the construction of the 200-inch Palomar telescope. Every night at the supper table I would hear names like Bruce Rule, Mickey Sherburne, Fritz Zwicky, and Caltech's president, Robert Millikan. (Sherburne had hired my dad because their wives knew each other from nurses' training at Pasadena Hospital, which became the Huntington Memorial Hospital.) I was too young to understand the significance of these men and what they achieved.I'm glad you stressed that from about 1939 on, most of the efforts of the Astrophysical Machine Shop were on war work. My dad was a Canadian who never became a citizen, but he was soon approved for a Secret Clearance, because he had to understand the need for the material and materiel he ordered.One fact about the photo taken on the day the Palomar Observatory was dedicated: I was the only boy in the photo. Dad thought being there was more important than being in McKinley Junior High that day.

Well written, very informative and a good read. Be aware, however, the kindle edition does not contain any drawings, illustrations or diagrams. This is a significant flaw in a book that relies on the description of complex optical and mechanical systems in order to understand the functioning of the telescope and the difficulties in its construction.

This is a fabulous account of how the Hale Telescope came into being! There are several books that take the Hale Telescope into account but none to this degree ( to my knowledge). One, for example is Polomar, by Helen Wright, 1952. Although it may be out of print, it is (I am still reading it at this time) written by the biographer of Hale. It is written using the actual words of the people involved and as such should certainly be added to the "must read" list. But " The Perfect Machine" in my opinion stands alone. If you are interested in this account or history of this momentous accomplishment, please, take time to consider picking it as a read. Coming into being, before the Depression and between two great wars, it survived other setbacks like a flood, technology failure and even an earthquake. Publicly, it was received with incredulity and awe. I was born in 1949, the same year the Hale telescope took its first image of Hubble's Variable Nebula. It took some 30+ years to get there and it is still being used today. I think it is one of the best stories ever told about man's quest to push the boundaries of science and knowledge ever outward.

I was a beginner observer searching for a better type of telescope to study the heavens from my backyard. A simple problem, so I thought. This book was recommended to me by Amazon of all places. This Palomar journal is a captivating readable primer to understand the sciences of physics, optics and light involved for enjoyable night viewing. It has helped me set a practical goal for buying equipment and my expectations of it.Ronald Florence has a wonderful way of writing. He captures the complex human interaction and personalities involved in achieving difficult discovery and includes just enough science to educate and create want to learn more.

Once again I find myself writing a review on a multiple book series instead of one book at a time. I can only say it's not my fault ..... honest. It is actually my Kindle's fault, I found the 2nd book in the series in my recommended list. Recalling the easy "Keys Vibe" from the 1st book I bought the book and we were off. I read all of the rest of the books currently in this series end to end. Each time I finished one book my kindle tossed up the next one and 1 click later I was deeply immersed in another Meade Breeze adventure. I have just finished the 5th, hopefully not the last, book in the series with Ed's note informing me that he is taking a short hiatus from writing. I would rather have seen a 6th book awaiting my pleasure, but I can't begrudge Ed and his wife a well earned vacation.I have thoroughly enjoyed the great stories, so well crafted by a writer that obviously has first hand knowledge and a love of what he writes about. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants to escape to the Keys and beyond with a colorful cast of characters led by a slightly flawed hero that you can't help but like.

Another great adventure tale. Meade Breeze has developed into one of my favorite fictional characters. Right up there with Doc Ford, Thorn, Mac Travis, Buck Reilly, and Travis McGee. In fact, Breeze is trying to live his life like his own favorite folk hero, Travis McGee, taking his retirement in little chunks and only taking on missions, when the money supply gets low, or there's a beautiful boat babe that needs help. I really enjoyed this latest story from Ed Robinson and hope that while he and his wife are on hiatus in the Berry Islands this summer, he continues to put pen to paper for another one.

The best of the series, I think. I downloaded it on March 19th and could not put it down, read it in one sitting. If you're familiar with the series, this latest offering brought back one of my favorite characters from Breeze's past, I did not see that coming until the last moment. The ending left me saying to myself, no way. It also left me jonesing for the next installment of the times and tales of Meade Breeze. Best read for me in awhile.

Breeze is up to his old antics. A beautiful and sexy woman, brushes with the law and morality, and of course, good boat tales. There is something captivating in the way Ed Robinson describes boating life. It is realistic. He really nails down the difference between the powerboat and sailing mindsets. Sailors love a stiff breeze and the waves are secondary. Power boaters are looking for calm passages. All in all, good light hearted entertainment.

As with the other 4 books in the series this is a great read. I enjoy Breeze's character. While this tied together the last book I hope we have not heard the last of Breeze. He seems to be up for a few more missions. While I gave the book 5 stars because I do enjoy them I hope Ed puts a little more effort into Breeze getting himself out of trouble. The last two books I think he was getting off easy.

Now I am addicted to Breeze. I started out with the books in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I am reading as fast as I can. Breeze is a bigger than life character. I can hardly wait to see what happens next. On to 6.

Breeze charts a course he hopes will end on a tranquil island with a beautiful woman. Some things get in the way, though, and there are twists and turns. The narrative put me right there on those beaches, in the coves, and in the marinas. The characters are genuine and endearing. As with the previous books in this series, I loved this story.

I have now read two Breeze adventures, Redeeming Breeze and this one, Bahama Breeze. I enjoyed both very much. I now live on a houseboat but not in Florida, however I lived in Florida for twenty years. These books really made me miss Florida. I am going to wait for the next Breeze book before I read another one in the series. You will understand why if you read Bahama Breeze.

Tina is an inspiration to make the most of life.I enjoyed learning about her extraordinary life, it was enlightening.

I have never been snowboarding and I loved the book. The author is an accomplished snowboarder who tells her personal story in an entertaining, personal, and humorous way. At times the book reads as if the author is talking to you as a personal friend sharing her adventures. There are some very funny stories in the book. I highly recommend it.

Pretty good for a girl was really good... It took me through every little part of Tina Basiches life. It even gave me some tips on how to be a better girl snowboarder myself!

I liked this book because I love snowboarding and she has made me want to be a pro too that is why I liked this book

I don't know anything about snowboarding and wasn't especially interested in it, but the title of this book caught my attention. God knows I heard "pretty good for a girl" often enough when I was growing up. Once I started Tina Basich's book, I was hooked.She tells of growing up in a Sacramento suburb and going to an alternative school where art and music were stressed. Her parents kept the TV in a closet only to be brought out for special occasions, such as the Olympics. Basich and her younger brother entertained themselves by drawing, composing and playing music, staging shows, skateboarding, and reading. By the time she went to high school (a public high school), she was accomplished in a number of fields and her hero was Nadia Comaneci.Basich tells of discovering snowboarding, becoming a pro, losing a friend to breast cancer and organizing snowboarding events to raise money for cancer research and education, and having several close calls of her own on the slopes. She talks about competitions, travels, and romances. She has a easy-to-read conversational style and the book is filled with photos and drawings.Snowboarders will enjoy the story of how she perfected the backside 720 over a 60-foot jump, as well as the descriptions of competitions and the name-dropping. And everyone who has heard (or said) the words "pretty good for a girl" will enjoy the success story of a focused young woman.

I also like the story of her becoming a pro-snowboarder. She is one of my female snowboarding idols. I also look up to her for making a "boarding for breast cancer" campaign that raises thousands of dollars every year that goes to researching breast cancer. Her life as being a professional snowboarder is exactly what I want to be when I grow up. I feel like her in many ways, such as not fitting in and always hanging out with a group of skateboarding guys. I also respect her for being one of the main snowboarding pioneers , not to mention one of the first girls to get up and do competitions against guys. I loved the truth in this book and how she knows what its like not being the most popular kid in school. You should really check out this book!

This book is awesome. I opened it and finished it in its entirety in one sitting. It was such an exciting read. I just recently started snowboarding and am totally psyched about it. Tina's changes in life are definitely relatable. She is an inspiration to me because there are so many girls who side-track themselves due to heartbreaking, intellectually debased boys. I've seen it happen all too often and has happened to me as well. To stay focused on your own goals and not let life get in the way is so difficult. Guys seem to have no problem doing it, but she proved that girls can pull it together too.oh yeah, the foo fighters suck.

Having graduated college, I think I was too well educated to read this book. It was so, like, 7th graderish. This book isn't very well written. It jumps around a bit, leaving the reader confused. For example, Tina talks about how she got a car soon after getting her drivers license, but then mentions that she crashed it a year later. So after reading about how she crashed it, she continues talking about how she drove everywhere. Fortunately, you can tell that Tina starts to mature a little bit as a writer near the end of the book. The other problem that I had with this book is that she tries to make women seem more disadvantaged than they really are. While there are 10x less professional women snowboarders, there are 10x as many male snowboarders, so it all evens out. Women have been a big part of snowboarding since it's inception, so I am therefore not convinced of her adversity. She does get credit back, though, because of her participation in the Boarding for Breast Cancer program. Overall, I'd skip this book and read "Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder" if you are into the "Action" sports books or "Swimming to Antarctica" if you want a women-pushing-the-sport type of book.
