I have truly enjoyed this book. While not begrudging the amount of press and film devoted to the horrible accident that sank RMS Titanic, it is wonderful to see this author concentrate his efforts on RMS Olympic, a nearly identical ship that served faithfully and well for decades. RMS Britannic, whose career was cut short by a WW I mine, is thoroughly covered. RMS Titanic is also well covered, though the drama of her sinking is left to the multitude of other sources available. Color is used where possible, engineering drawings, interior views, wonderful photographs, and so on abound. The text is crisp and informative. If ocean liners appeal to you, and you would like to know more about "Old Reliable," the "nice guy" ship that didn't come to a tragic end, this book will reward you handsomely.

Considering I have an extensive collection of books on this subject, this one is my favourite. It is well researched and documented. It is accurate in that Mr. Chirnside has made a great effort to clarify nearly all the misinformation that has been perpetuated over and over in other books on this subject as well as providing additional information, both technical and visual, not found in previous books. It is very readable and well thought out. Overall a fine effort and attractively priced considering the content. Highly recommended.

I read a statistic that said that the Titanic was one of the three most written about subjects in history, and browsing through the available books on Amazon and other sites certainly gives credence to that. I would imagine that like many much-written subjects the number of GOOD books is merely a fraction of that number, but this book is certainly one of the good ones.Richly illustrated with accurate captioning it certainly opens up my understanding of the Olympic class liners and is a valuable addition to my growing library on the subject. The ONLY way it could be better would be if I could buy a copy to read on my Kindle like a previous title I have bought....like this!Titanic or Olympic: Which Ship Sank?

The illustration and layout is quite good. My son is really into ships that sunk and he is eight. The ones he found in the library mostly are written for adults only and not many pictures but this had a lot of pictures and I think he really likes it.

I'm currently working on an original fiction story that in effect can be seen as a sort of Biography of the RMS Olympic, and as I was already more than familiar with the story of Titanic, I needed info on the Lead Ship herself. Mister Chirnside not only supplies, but supplies in abundance of interesting and exhaustive information from the start of construction in 1908 to Olympic's scrapping in 1935.In fiction there is the concept of the "Hero of Another Story," where a side character is alluded to have adventures just as interesting as (if not more so than) the Protagonist's, and for decade's Olympic has been such a figure in the Titanic story, a glorified footnote if she is mentioned at all. At long last, we can finally know Olympic's story.

The photos are even clearer quality than previously published. Some are even in color! This book is beautiful and full of information on the Olympic class ships. I was not disappointed. I definitely recommend it for steamship aficionados. Lots of photos of passengers onboard Olympic; Olympic during war service; inside/outside Britannic and Titanic on the sea floor! Lots of neat white star lines ads too.

Great addition for anyone who collects books on the Titanic and her sister ships!

Great book, filled with many unknown facts.

Also bought this for my artist granddaughter who is building a collection of art books. Mucha is one of my favorites so I looked though the books as well. I read the reviews and was concerned about the comments about the layout. The reviews were correct. Almost none of the reproductions are on the same pages as the text that describes them. Very frustrating. However, the layout is also dramatic and a pleasure to look at. The detail plates are particularly striking. The cover has raised portions and makes a wonderful tactile presentation on the coffee table or propped on a bookshelf. Because of the complaints, however, I decided to buy the Sarah Mucha book as well as it had more information, particularly about his late work. The 2 together give a more complete picture of the artist and his work.

This book is beautiful.I had no idea when I bought it, but the cover actually has some sparkly embellishments on it. Makes for a beautiful coffee book table or looks great on the shelf!I'm an art student and Mucha is my all time favorite artist so I had to get this book. The illustrations are large and look great.

I opened the box today! I feel like it is Christmas Day! This is the most beautiful representation of my favorite artist's work! The hard cover is also the same as the paper cover. Every page is excellent and beautiful! I was recently at the Alphonse Mucha Museum in Prague! I purchased a book there but it is no comparison to this book! Thank you Rosalind Ormiston for this book! I have placed it on an Easle and will display it as artwork.

For fans of Mucha, this book provides a lovely overview of his work -- mainly his posters and illustrative style. I didn't see much of his painterly work here--which is remarkable and not as well-known as one might hope--but that is not unusual, since he is most widely known for his promotional stuff. I gave this book as a gift so I did not read the text in its entirety, but I was pleased with it nonetheless and the recipient seemed delighted. It is weighty, dressy-looking, and would serve nicely as the proverbial coffee-table book.

I recently returned from visiting the Mucha Museum in Prague and wanted a book that had a good representation of his work. this book is an excellent one and with the work shown in color. I Admit to being a bit disappointed that none of his oil paintings were included. THey were a part of his work I had never been exposed to until I visited Prague. This book no only gives you a timeline of his work but shows excellent examples of it.The book itself is beautiful . Printed on heavy paper with crisp prints in full color.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful and most definitive sources of Czech Art Nouveau that you could ever wish for. The plates are all in pure, unbridled color and the information is rich. I consider to be a welcome addition to my architectural library.

Worth the money - agree with comments that there is no correlation between the images of the art work and the historical narrative. Just random pictures. Even when the narrative refers to a specific work...NO IMAGE OF THE WORK...anywhere! pretty amazing. I think a high school editor would have flagged this. But the narrative is decent, and the production value is high. I enjoy this book.

I love Mr. Mucha's work. There's something about it that reminds me of tarot cards and old fantasy paintings with just that oh, so subtle edge of reality.

This book is hands down the best book I've found for teaching art appreciation. It starts off giving some info about Rembrandt's birth, etc, then it gives more info about the artist's life while describing a particular painting and why his art is unique. The paintings are a decent size in the book, but there are also close ups of certain parts of the painting that the author wants us to make note of . I will be purchasing more of these books for our future studies.

Great series! They have more artistic information than we had expected. These books were like have our own tutor on each of the artist and their technique. We got more than we bargained for.

Rembrandt van Rijn, a favorite artist of the Dutch school, was very young when he began studying to be a painter. He was 'on his own' by age 23 after only six months with a successful painter-instructor. It wasn't long before he was sought-out and moved to Amsterdam, a more convenient location for the many portrait commissions he accepted. Rembrandt never traveled very far from Leiden where he was born in July 15, 1606. Try to imagine - - tulips were not introduced to Holland until his lifetime! The flower had a tumultuous history of its own (read "TULIPOMANIA" >> isbn # 060980765x << & similar titles) - - fortunately tulips were NOT banned as an invasive plant. There is one beautifully shown in the floral "crown" worn by "Flora" - a painting now hanging in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia. It demonstrates Rembrandt's delicate brush strokes and use of his palette.Light and dark always played a primary "role" in van Rijn's works. The contrast, called by an Italian word >chiaroscuro< is often used when describing Rembrandt's painting style. The artist was famous for this use of light & dark to show contrast; he avoided symmetry, 'toyed with' perspective - -and the paintings included in this book serve to illustrate these important characteristics of his art.Rembrandt often chose topics to paint that reflected his interest in married love, and in Biblical stories. In the latter, Dutch people were painted in familiar, not Palestinian, settings. The painting of the Mennonite preacher and his wife was new to me, and of particular interest. The author tells us that "the Bible dominates one half of the (entire)canvas." Anatomy lessons were another traditional subject for large canvases at that time. These were called "memento mori" - - Individuals in such group paintings often paid to be included.New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art inaugurated this series of books for young readers and it was an inspired project. The author sheds true light on the art without condescending to readers. There is something encouraging about the author's tone as he instructs us about the many artist 'tricks' that were used & now aid our understanding & appreciation of the Rembrandt's mastery. Muhlberger also points out how changes in personality can be detected in self-portraits done at different stages of Rembrandt's life. These self-portraits involved the complicated positioning of two mirrors.Thank you, Rembrandt van Rijn, for your works that have enriched lives through the centuries. And mcHaiku adds sincerest thanks to Richard Muhlberger, who compiled and edited this excellent & very readable book for young people (and fortunate others).
