When I received this book I did a quick page flipping scan and my initial thought was one of disappointment. I could have easily forgotten about it and written it off as a marginal work. Thankfully I took the time to sit down and actually go through this gem. I am an old geezer sailor and sailmaker who learned "ropework" from the likes of Hervey Garrett Smith's "The Marlin Spike Sailor" and Brion Toss's many videos and books. And those guys set pretty high bars to match. But Barbara Merry's book belongs in that same class of expert, well written and properly illustrated marlinspike seamanship references. Her pictures and explanations are easy to understand and follow and she provides details on the materials and their lengths and sizes. So my watch cap is off to Barbara! Well done....

My wife and I have been working on the rehabilitation of a series of old sailboats for several years. As part of that, we have tried to pick up some of the craft and skill that was traditionally possessed by seafaring folk.Marlinspike craftsmanship is one of those skills. We have purchased several books on this craft over the years, but most have one of two shortcomings: either they show pictures of interesting crafts but provide no directions or they provide directions but only include the most basic and utilitarian of knots.This book includes some very interesting knots and we have used it as a guide to crafting several projects, including monkeys fists to weight the end of throwing (man overboard) line, smaller monkeys fists to create loops for stowing line, woven treads for our companionway steps, and coasters that we use aboard our boat and have started making during rainy days at anchor to give away to friends. A picture of one such coaster is attached. I plan to start a larger door mat soon.I would love to see a sequel with more project ideas and instructions.

It's okay. It has a bunch of projects to do but...but, the illustrations are hard to follow and steps seem to be omitted. She shows the hard way to make a Turks Head bracelet, ie. on a table top instead of on your hand like I first saw in the Navy and one can find on You Tube. If you can already tie the knots, this might be handy for craft ideas but not so much as a learning guide. Save this one for later.

A good starting point but better resources are available online for free. I didn't find much more than I could find from a Boy Scout manual.

This book covers a lot of display and function knots. I'm not that happy with the examples and text instructions in the book. The text is not very clear to me, and the diagrams or not that helpful.

Scott Shupe began his naturalist career in 1971 at the famed Ross Allen Reptile Institute in Silver Springs, Florida. I had earlier reviewed the U. S. Navy manual "Poisonous Snakes of the World" (1965) and was pleased to find this modern (2012) update. Scott Shupe has corrected the various Latin names, based on modern taxonomic studies, and the illustrations have been much improved and expanded. The number of known venomous snakes (he also corrects "poisonous" to "venomous") has more than tripled, from 175 to 600, with most at least listed and a large number described. Range maps are included for most important species, a much needed improvement. Finally, a very much needed revision of first aid techniques was added. In reality this is not simply a revision, but a wholly re-written text.I found one typo on page 304. The photograph there is not of a cottonmouth but of a Sahara sand viper. Obviously this is just a mislabel and I have not as yet found any other problems. While this book is not a complete reference it is a relatively cheap review of the subject in a handy size and should serve its intended audience of service men and women, and travelers well.

If you are a fan of venomous snakes, this book is one of the best overall references on the subject that I have seen. The information is both detailed and accessible which can be difficult to find in reference books. Many books like this either have pictures with little description or read like a biology textbook. In my opinion, this book has the best of both worlds: lots of pictures of common/rare snakes, habitat descriptions, and a breakdown of venom type and available antivenoms. I have owned a lot of snake books in my life and this is one of the best.

I was greatly impressed by the quality of the color photos of the various specimens and the detailed descriptions of the reptiles, their habitats and their behavioral traits.

I used the original text extensively when I did my thesis work on the medical management of snake bite and envenomation. Grateful for this beautiful new update! This reference is a must-have for Herpetologists and for scientists and physicians interested in snake venom and envenomation.

Great book for the hobby herpetologist. A lot of information. If you're looking for great pictures and a more entertaining (but less complete) read, look at Mark O'Shea's Snakes Of The World instead. But if you want a pretty extensive reference book, this is the one to get.
