Bought this book after reading a very interesting article online about the subject. While I don't regret reading it, I would probably only recommend it to someone with a strong interest (and even then, not with glowing reviews). The most interesting parts are the interviews with the tunnel dwellers. This would have been a much better book had the author focused on these rather than on himself and the actual tunnel.Aside from the interviews, the rest is pretty much just filler, and very obviously so. The author fails to make smooth transitions when he introduces historical tunnels and events, reaching painfully for connections between the two. The photos don't really add to the narrative either. The ones that are most interesting-- of the people and their "homes"-- are uncaptioned and never referred to in the text.My major issue with this book, though, was the author's troubling insensitivity toward the individuals living in the tunnels. It seems like he's trying to set up a possible change in attitude, from viewing everyone in the tunnel as druggies and losers to gaining a respect for them as individuals, but this change never really occurs (at least not in any clear way). Instead, he confusingly goes from being impressed by the intelligence of one man to making crude analogies and referring to others as "meth freaks" and "lunatics."In conclusion, if you can ignore the author's attitude and writing style, there really is some interesting stuff in here.

I stumbled across "Beneath the Neon" quite by accident on Amazon.com's website. As someone intrigued on the subject matter of homelessness and survival, the book turned out to be a lucky find. Matt's writing style invited me along for his adventures in the exploration of life beneath Las Vegas. There I was able to glimpse through his eyes at the sights, smells, and desperation that others endure. I had actually visited a few of the worldly locations Matt writes about in comparing the drains to the underground tunnels of Cappadocia, in Turkey and could relate more closely with the conditions of living under Las Vegas. In researching the book online, I read about a website ([...]), Matt founded in an attempt to assist those lost people dwelling under the city. Luckily for the readers, he keeps this updated so you can sort-of follow the "What's happening now?" question.I feel for those people that have become disjointed from society and find solace under the drains, in the city and am thankful that I don't count myself in their numbers. I recommend you buy the book so, 1) You can be thankful about what you are missing and 2) So you can have a greater understanding of the lives of those living literally under the feet of Glamorous Vegas, and 3) To help you look into the Abyss of Life beneath the neon.Dave Nelson

What a summer!I got the book yesterday and started reading it at about 6:00pm. It is now 1:30am and I just finished reading it. I only stopped a couple of times but I really could not put it down. Bravo!I don't believe Matthew O'Brien when he says that he more an author and journalist than an explorer. It is true that he was motivated because of a felon escape story, but a regular journo would have stopped after reenacting the escape and a regular author would have relied more on fiction. O'Brien created a chronicle about what lies beneath, not only Las Vegas but beneath many other metropolitan areas around the world.Throughout the whole book he kept mentioning the baton. I really hope it always stayed in its sheat.I also liked his wrinting style, the waythe flashbacks keep connection with the narration of the present time and especially enjoyed the historical facts about the use of tunnels, caves and their explorers throughout the history of mankind.O'Brien was able to uncover the real people that lives in the drains, and showed us that even if forgotten, ignored or simply at large, they are not the monsters that people think hide in the dark and humid corners of the undercity. And the author goes beyond simply writing a book by helping those in need through his foundation. Thanks for writing that book, for telling the story of those people living underground and for helping them out.

I LOVE social history being a history teacher and this has to be one of the best social perspective history books I've read. Easy to read and I was hooked and couldn't stop reading! I've heard of the tunnel people of Las Vegas being a resident, and this book took me into their world without having to take my germ and bug-a-phobic self into the tunnels. It was fun to read about places I could imagine, and Matthew wrote with such honesty and integrity and knowledge that it was an instant favorite I couldn't put down. After seeing we had many mutual friends on Facebook, I added Matthew and he was extremely friendly and willing to answer any questions I had on the book, which made it even more fun to read...in the end I got to read an amazing book and made an amazing new friend! :)

I did finish "She Made Me Laugh: My Friend Nora Ephron" but am not sure what to make of it: if you want a bird's-eye view of Nora Ephron's fabulous Manhattan-Hamptons lifestyle, including names of upscale kitchenware, designer fabrics, and chichi restaurants, this is the book for you; it's especially helpful if you're renovating a home. If you're keen to hear bits about her famous friends, including Steven Spielberg, Meg Ryan, and Washington hostess Sally Quinn, then immediately click "buy" on Amazon's Kindle edition. If you're looking for tips on international travel, complete with exclusive hotels and obscure food finds, pack this along with your Fodor's. If you want to experience schadenfreude and feelings of superiority, devour every page, because Cohen pigeonholes Ephron as a narcissistic social climber whose controlling ways brooked no challenge; yet, he's shrewd enough to scatter about perfunctory compliments, which lend a superficial warmth and balance to his memories. With each chapter, I wondered what emotions their platonic relationship was based upon: one-sided, or mutual, contempt came to mind.In short, if you want a broad picture and deep insights into Ephron herself -- on the whys and wherefores of her personality and choices -- you might want to skip Cohen's take. I can't help but assume that's what Ephron's husband, two of her sisters, and sons did, because none is mentioned in Cohen's acknowledgments. That all said, I finished the book, and pretty quickly too, which is why I started this review with "[I'm] not sure what to make of it."

I have long been a Nora Groupie, and when she died in 2012, I was devastated. My love for her incredible wit and writing style started in the 70s and continued until her death. I have read her sister Delia's moving tribute to her, and I have also watched her son Jacob's equally moving (and fascinating) HBO documentary, "Everything Is Copy."So I could hardly wait to get my hands on Richard Cohen's book, since he was one of her inner-inner circle. And what I found was an insider's guide to Nora that I am sure her plethora of friends and acquaintances loved, and rightly so. But what about the rest of us?Amid the endless name dropping (all in an effort to explain how Nora effortlessly drew any acquaintance, no matter how famous, into her life) and anecdotes (some just lovely, some not so much), Cohen seems to be saying, "But I was the best! I was her BEST friend! I really, truly, really, really, loved her!" After a while, I started to feel that I was very much an outsider, that Nora would have found me a fool for loving her, and a lightweight besides. I would have been skewered by her sharp, and often cruel, wit--all described in this book. So for me, her light started to shine a bit dimmer. What I got from the book was this: Nora Ephron was brilliant. No question whatsoever. She was talented as hell. She was a complex and contradictory human being, often the case with brilliant people. She was loving and giving, but she could turn on a dime and freeze somebody out. For those in her inner circle, like Cohen, she was something of a goddess. For others, she was the quintessential hostess, wit, conversationalist and nurturing friend. But she was also bossy to a fault. Cohen tells the story, which he found very funny, about how she absolutely insisted that he purchase a very expensive and unwieldy food processor from France--it was the ONLY food processor to own, she belligerently insisted. So he got the food processor, and laboriously used it--until he came to her kitchen several months later and found that she had quietly discarded her own French appliance--and bought a Cuisinart, which Cohen wanted in the first place, and which she had ridiculed. He found this story hilarious and endearing. I did not. There are other such stories as well. I think Cohen, as a dear friend (and I do not dispute that), was at pains to show Nora with all her flaws, and to show people that even with these flaws, she was a paragon. It doesn't quite work. The more name dropping and descriptions of lavish vacations he described, the more I felt that I was on another planet. My take on the book is this: If you knew and loved Nora, you will adore this book. Otherwise, skip it.

had this book been edited carefully, I would have given it five stars. the content gave me a closer, more intimate look into the life of one of my all- time favorite writers. unfortunately, the book could have benefited greatly had a better proofreader given it another go before sending it out to be printed. one or two mistakes can be overlooked, but the number of errors throughout is regrettable.

Nora Ephron may have been very intelligent and highly talented, but this book revealed that she was not a very nice person. It was a good book, but I was disappointed to learn of her mercurial temperament and haughtiness.

I've always admired Nora Ephron but if this is the person she chose as a best friend, I'm disappointed. He states over and over how there isn't anything about her he didn't know then writes about hie surprised he was to learn she mentored low income teens. He judges women in the book by their looks constantly, not so the men, looking at the book jacket I can why. Nothing in this book gives any incite into his friend,

Fun, fun, fun. I always wish I had met Nora, and this book confirms what a dynamic woman she was. Kudos!

I loved this book. I was such a fan of Nora Ephron - this book really humanized her and let us in on what she was like as a person, as opposed to her body of work. Richard Cohn did a terrific job of sharing info about Ephron. I highly recommend this book.

Great tribute to Nora. Made me sad but it was wonderful. Only thing that could have made this book better was some photos!

A fine addition to the literature about the doomed MARKET-GARDEN campaign. Kershaw does a fantastic job of gathering together information that no other MARKET-GARDEN historian has been able to do --- a knock by knock account from the German side. The photographs that Kershaw has put in the book are amazing. Most of the photographs I have never seen before. The combat photographs are fantastic. It is rare that photographs and history blend together so well in a serious scholarly text. The book will delight any student of the MARKET-GARDEN operation.A few words of warning. First, the book does not examine the Allied point of view at all. In fact, the book basically assumes that the reader will be familiar with the major Allied players and their objectives (ex. the book often refers to Col. John Frost's men at Arnhem bridge -- however, the book never really explains who Frost is). Given that book is probably written for people interested in the subject-matter, this criticism is minor. Also, Kershaw's prose is not like Stephen Ambrose fo Citizen Soldiers fame. Kershaw is not a writer by trade. Nevertheless, Kershaw's personalized treatment of events will keep the reader captivated from page 1 until the epilogue. When I picked up IT NEVER SNOWS IN SEPTEMBER it had been a while since I read a MARKET-GARDEN book. Therefore, I read Kershaw's book and Cornelius Ryan's A BRIDGE TOO FAR back to back. Wow. What a double-header that was!Bottom line: highly recomended.

This one great book for learning the German side of this series of battles, culminating in the Germans securing the Arnhem bridge and subduing Lieutenant Colonel John Frost and the British 2nd Parachute Battalion. This book describes missed opportunities on both sides to take advantage of the other tactically. Also, the book details the German's ability to improvise and pull together a defense in a short period of time to meet the allied airborne troops dropped unexpectedly upon them. This book also gives the reader a feel for the ferocious nature of the battle the Germans were tangled in with the allies and the Germans well done attempt to meet the threats with the limited resources at their disposal. Another thing I liked about the book was it is told largely from the level of the common soldier.l highly recommend "It never Snows in September", because it is one of those books that is so interesting in telling its story that you can't put it down!

loved the book and all the info that I had not read before. The only thing I did not like was the way that instead of the words running across the page, they are broken into 2 columns .this makes it where to read where the pages come together, you must open the book as wide as possible.I was almost afraid that I would split the binding. That is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars.I always love to read books "from the other side".

The critical difference employed in this book about Operation Market Garden is its use of the German perspective regarding the fabled and fatefully miscalculated Allied assault in the fall of 1944 in an vainglorious attempt to grab and hold several bridges leading into Germany. This book by British author Robert J. Kershaw retelling the oft-told tale of the momentous Allied miscalculation of potential German resistance and the speed with which the Allied armored forces could proceed up the one road needed to support and sustain the airdropped forces is a riveting tale. Like the most famous book yet published (a new book on the subject is due out this fall) it graphically describes the total cost in terms of human life and unnecessary destruction. This is a story told at every level, but concentrating on the faithful recollections of the German participants in the action. Thus, the reader is swept into the action to get a voyeur's view of the moment-to-moment development of the story as it unfolds to the Wehrmacht's amazement in all its horrific detail. The title refers to a German soldier's observation of the white parachutes suddenly filling the morning sky over Arnhem; since it never snows in September, the soldier instantly realized it must mean an invasion. As mentioned above, the preponderance of attention is paid to the recollections and experiences of the German armed forces, although these are balanced with liberal sprinklings of noncombatants and Allied observations. It is clear that the author feels that earlier works on this subject leaves the reader with a quite biased view of the events, and he marshals an impressive number of impressive findings to suggest the Allies were either criminally negligent or unbelievably inept in assessing the risks associated with the operation. From the beginning they should have understood the degree of ferocity and tenacity with which the Germans would respond. Much of what is said here reflects poorly on judgments made by the Allied hierarchy, but especially Field Marshall Montgomery and also Eisenhower in allowing the raid to proceed. At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that such decisions were often made against best judgment, and that it is far easier in historical retrospective to criticize a disastrous decision which could have potentially shortened the war by six months and saved hundreds of thousands of lives. This is a provocative and absorbing book, one I am sure all WWII buffs will enjoy paging through, and one stirring the pot of expectation regarding the newest entry in the Operation Market Garden discussion due out early this fall. I highly recommend this book, and like an earlier reviewer, suggest it be read along with Cornelius Ryan's "A Bridge Too Far", which to my mind is till the standard work on the subject. Enjoy.

Great overview of Adaptive Optics. It is especially good if you don't need all the details, but enough information to work with the field, such as controls for a system using adaptive optics.
