I got this book from some friends who gave it to me in order to learn new things. This book is not "for Dummies". It assumes that you already have some knowledge of structured programming languages. For example, this book spends some well-written pages explaining everything you need to know about functions. If you don't know what a function is, this will clearly not be enough. However, if you do know about functions, this book will not drone on and on for an entire chapter or two on the subject like some of the foot-crunching tomes the size of an encyclopdia. In adition this book contain plenty knowledge about Raspberry programming and how it works, it contain several tips to learn in a very fast way all the complements of the theme, it also have a lot of good excersises to practice the coding.

If you are a creative person like me you will love this book. My girlfriend gave it to me and once I read it for the first time I decided to buy a raspberry pi and try it out. The book explains everything pretty well, it will teach you how to install the raspberry pi, put on any operating system that you want and much more. This book is perfect for someone who, like me, is just starting to grasp the knowledge to program and use the raspberry pi effectively, since its useful information that you will certainly make use of.

I bought a raspberry pi because I had seen some projects with them that seemed really cool, so I went and got one but I did not really know how to use it. A couple of days ago a friend of mine gave me this book as a gift so I could make use of my raspberry pi. The book has quite a bit of information for its size, and it is projected in a way that is easy to understand for everyone, so do not worry, if you are a beginner like me you will be just fine with this book.

My brother knows how much I like tech stuff, so he got me a raspberry pi and this book for my birthday. I wanted to get a raspberry pi for a long time but I never got around to buying one, but now that I have one I'll definitely put it to good use. I really like the book, I knew a bit of programming so I understood most terms quite easily, so if you don't know much about this you'll still get it quite easily. My favorite part was how to install Linux on it, since I tried it myself to no avail.

My dad bought me a raspberry pi for my birthday, but I did not know how to use it so I put it aside for some time. Now I started college and I would like to learn how to use it for some of the projects that I will be doing there, so a dear friend got me this book as a gift. I started reading and aplying what I learned inmediately. I have a couple of interesting projects that I will be doing soon so that should be awesome. If you are a beginner like me I'd totally recommend you get this book.

I often found myself wishing for a more structured approach to the topics covered in the book. In many early chapters key points are introduced in examples rather than as theorems or propositions or the like. It did provide some nice intuition, but overall I'd recommend getting a more "traditional" book on the subject as well if you get assigned this book for a class.

This book is a great balance of concrete examples and general results. It's proven very useful for independent study and is almost entirely self contained. It would have been nice to have separate existence and uniqueness proofs in chapter 17 but the proof provided is sufficient and decent to read.

First off, Great book. NOT a easy book to follow by any means, but decent in its own right.Oh thats right, what am I reviewing, It arrived relatively quickly, and was in excellent shape.

I read this book quicker than I wanted to. It will be a wonderful resource to come back with the explorations and the exercises. As such this review pertains to reading rather than getting the most out of this book. This limitation aside, this is a very clearly written and illustrated book.There is a progressive increase in complexity proceeding from one dimensional linear autonomous differential equations, to linearisation of non-linear equation, qualitative assessments through analysis of equilibrium points, Poincare maps. The section introducing chaos (focussing on hallmarks of density of periodic orbits, transitivity and sensitivity to initial conditions) is very interesting. I found the chaotic behaviour of logistic map and relation (homeomorphism) to Cantor sets very interesting.It is a very good textbook and I look forward to a time when I can maximize my learning by diving into the explorations (esp. with Mathematica).

I have been using this book for years. I wish I could get into some of the specifics that I found most useful, but I lent it to a student and they never gave it back. That makes sense--this book saved my bacon when I took an innocuously named "Applied Dynamical Systems" class (ha!), and the "borrower" can be forgiven for needing it equally much. I found that the descriptions, and particularly the illustrations, provided more detail than Strogatz, and with greater brevity, without assuming an excess of knowledge. It is also vastly gentler than, say, Guckenheimer & Holmes, and has much more information than Hale.At the time that I read this book, I had only taken an introductory class on ODEs, and a pretty light one at that. With some googling and supplemental exercises, I got through the material alright. I particularly appreciated the useful examples, which I still find myself consulting now and then, especially while preparing for lectures. I highly recommend it.

The first chapter is maybe the most important chapter of any book, and the problem with this one is that it fails to motivate the material, while frustrating the reader because it skips many steps in the calculation. Three to five pages in, you are already asking yourself about the merit of the small details in the calculations when the big picture of the concepts is not explained. I came back 8 years later to write this comment, which should be an indication to the enthusiastic new math student who is eager to learn this subject. As a result of the course I took with this book, I missed the very basics of differential equations, which hurt me in PDEs, and as a result, I specialized in subjects that were completely orthogonal to differential equations. While this book doesn't deserve 100% of the blame, some of it goes to the professor who was even worse than the book at glossing over important concepts, it definitely takes partial blame. Good story but felt like I had read it before. Only major problem for me was the sexual situations with both teenage girls, there was no reason for it and did not help or move the story along

Would've been a 4 out of 5 stars from me but for the icky stuff that happens somewhere in the last third of the book. I won't say what it is, but you could look up the story of Lot and what happens in the cave, and you'll be somewhat in the neighborhood of what goes down. It just made me super-uncomfortable and made me feel I couldn't trust where the narrative was going. And I'm now disinclined to pick up the sequel. Jeez, I guess I AM a prude. Goes to show, a book could read like it's the greatest thing ever, but, then, one little thing can just botch it.

After the Fall: Jason's Story is a wonderful post-EMP novel of character development against some terrific violence. It's a bildungsroman (novel of character growth) for several characters, one of whom will be featured in the sequel: the author mentions it will be Catherine's Tale. I can't wait!Some typos indicated to me the author isn't from Appalachia since he referred to Appalachia for Appalachian. He also used 'out of site' several times as well as a few obvious typos (not too many) and at one point changed Ray Turner to Sam Turner. Notwithstanding these few typos, the writing was good and the people engaging. The villains were, of course, villainous.Recommended.

If you're a fan of books of this genre, I found that this one does not disappoint. In fact, this is probably the best, most surprising book of this genre I have read in a long time!! The characters are very human and not every character is an operator who already possesses tactical skills, an arsenal and training when it hits the fan. Also, the characters are not all super moral, religious individuals who don't all have their human flaws. There is a surprising amount of sexual tension in this book, which I found helped to make the characters more realistic and relatable. I wouldn't call some of the scenes between a few of the main characters graphic, but it was a little shocking to find such detail in a dystopian survival book. I found those details kind of welcome!! It is one of the reasons that this book stood out from others I have read recently. I also like how the author mentions some specific models of firearms and other equipment - I find this to be helpful for readers who are reading not just for entertainment, but because they want to learn and maybe start buying a few things themselves. A little more detail (model, caliber, why the character chose that model/caliber weapon, etc.) in future books would be welcome. Overall, this was a GREAT READ. Very enjoyable and entertaining - sounds cliché, but I truly did not want to put this book down each night! Found myself thinking about reading it that evening while I was at work during the day. This book was definitely a surprise as I did not expect it to be as engaging of a read as it was! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic of survival!

I give this book 5 stars. It is well written, holds your attention, involves you with the characters and is just a great read.The subject of the book is also very important, as this catastrophe could very well happen. Our government is doing little if anything to guard against such an event. That is frightening. The book gives a very realistic description of what to expect in the event of catastrophe. The author doesn’t pull any punches.I particularly like the classy way the author deals with the sexual parts of the story, and presents the main character as one with a strength of character. The next book, which continues the story, will be out before long. I can’t wait.I highly recommend this new author, David Nees, to anyone who enjoys a realistic, suspenseful page turner.

I forgot to review this book when I initially read it. I agree with most of the other complaints that the love/sexual themes in the book related to the main character and the woman and her daughters feels really out of place and like the biggest misstep of this book. However it opens so strongly its hard not to recommend. I've since gone back and re-read the first half of the book more than once. Great book.

This book starts out a good read. Terrorists set off an EMP that fries the electrical grid. Gym owner Jason has to figure out a way to survive the chaos & society breakdown that ensues. Thankfully Jason does NOT return home to his fully stocked with everything he'll ever need, nuclear bomb proof bunker under his house. I hate it when authors give characters that easy out. He has pretty much what the average person has so far as equipment goes. He uses that, his know how & work ethic to survive. So far, really good right?Then Jason moves in with Annie & her two precocious teenage daughters. This is where the book took a BIG dive for me. There's a whole totally unneeded, creepy sexual subplot involving the girls (masturbation scene included), that totally left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm not a prude, but this teenage girl really coming on to a not-disinterested Jason, grossed me out. I won't be bothering with the sequel featuring the gun-toting, but sexually desperate step-daughter. A real bummer, as without this whole distasteful subplot, this would have been a good book.

Wow, one of the best post apocalyptic books I have read in a while. The characters are well developed and intriguing. One man's fight to gain a family and protect their lives. Can't wait for more from this incredible new author.

About the Author

Richard Adams Carey was born in Connecticut and educated at Harvard College. After his graduation he went to work in a northwestern sawmill, and he has since divided his time between Alaska and New England. Carey lives with his family in North Sandwich, New Hampshire, and works at the Holderness School.

The thrilling, elegantly written crime-story, travelogue, history and adventures of a 250-million year old fish that has 4, 8 or 16 chromosomes. Yes, of course it is about caviar as well, as the inventor of the word "ecology" and founder of the Sierra Club himself John Muir said, way back in the 1800s, "you follow the money" and the money, in caviars case, leads to the death and extinction of one of the world's greatest fish, the sturgeon.The attempts to save the endangered species of the world, from man's grasping greed, are nearly all sad stories with very unhappy endings. The importance of the sturgeon is not in the "black gold" of caviar alone, not the jaded palates of our Gatsby's, but in its links to our own evolution and understanding. Carey undertook research in the sturgeons waters from Florida's Suwannee River - where my wife had the privilege of seeing a sturgeon leap like a mackerel - to the weirdness and corruption of Turkmenistan. This book has been built upon very much boots-on-the ground research, which yielded facts, characters and experiences that made the author weep. It is only a story about a fish ... and a scaly monstrous, dragon-like beast at that ... but the pathos of this animal's slaughter - still only rated as "Threatened" despite its poaching and poisoning - is truly heart rending.Will we continue to choose oil and dams, Their attendant pollution, theft and corruption, which cater to mankind's need for instant gratification, or do we, somehow, somewhere, find resources for these endangered species which are "for ever" as peoples as diverse as Native Americans and Caspian Sea fisherman plead?A very powerful, well written book that will give any reader food for thought, particularly if they love caviar!

The Philosopher Fish is a well-written and entertaining look at sturgeon, sturgeon conservation and caviar. Gets a little too much into legal battles across borders and illegal caviar traffic, but still worth a read. I would give it 5 stars if it focused on the fish a little more.

A well written very interesting book on a very interesting subject

In THE PHILOSOPHER FISH, Richard Adams Carey has written an epic chronicle of the sturgeon--a fish species rapidly approaching extinction wherever it swims--as well as of its precious product, caviar. Selling for as much as one hundred dollars an ounce, caviar has become an icon of status and success, and as such, it has led to the inevitable decline of that curious and prehistoric fish: the sturgeon.Carey exams both the fish as a species as well as the industry that seeks to exploit it. The fascinating and ancient phylogeny of the sturgeon notwithstanding, this fish is clearly in trouble. In the last two decades, sturgeon populations have shrunk to less than one third of what they were. Much of U.S. trade in caviar, as elsewhere, is illegal, but up until now, those who are working to save the sturgeon are largely ineffective. As in the drug trade, the potential rewards to be reaped by the caviar industry have led to energetic smuggling operations, the mislabeling of sturgeon species on caviar tins, as well as other shenanigans. Among the many storylines covered in THE PHILOSOPHER FISH, Carey follows the efforts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stymie the illegal trade in caviar, though as a result of 9/11, their resources have largely been diverted elsewhere.Carey also follows several of the sturgeons' champions in this world as they seek to improve the fish's plight. There is some slight hope in the efforts of those that hatchery-spawn sturgeon species for aquacultural purposes and possibly for future restocking projects. In his search for every sturgeon-related experience he could find, Carey even ice-fishes for sturgeon in Lake Winnebago, one of the few places in the world where this can be done (strict quotas make the season as short as only 2 days a year), but he clearly feels conflicted about it (he didn't catch anything). He drinks vodka along the shores of the Volga River as he observes the trade, both legal and illegal, of the world's most famous caviar locales.THE PHILOSOPHER FISH takes the reader around the world, from Sacramento to the shores of the Caspian Sea. Many of the stories involve intrigue and espionage of the highest order. Others are humorous or bitter-sweet. Still others offer hope. All are intensely interesting. I enjoy reading books that tell me more than I ever wanted to know about one circumscribed subject. THE PHILOSOPHER FISH is such a book, and I give it my highest recommendation.Jeremy W. Forstadt
